I love all the classes I attend regularly—Teja’s strength and balance, Debra’s stay fit and Zumba gold, Nicole’s resilience, and Mary’s gentle yoga. I attended an orientation of the weight room that was not particularly helpful. The person was not very engaging or encouraging. I’m intimidated by all the machines and could have used some suggestions about how a novice might best get started.

The Y has pretty much everything you need for a basic gym it is on the smaller side as far as equipment goes but it does have machines and free weights there's also a bunch of classes like yoga and pilates as well as child daycare for when you work out and then of course the pools that were just recently refinished and are heated. There's also a small co-ed sauna and a outdoor area as well as a basketball court.

I’ve been a member of the Sonoma County YMCA for about 20 years. I’ve especially enjoyed swimming and interacting with fellow members. That has all changed since an incident in October, 2025, when another member-out of the blue- came after me in a very threatening and intimidating manner because I was looking at my cell phone in the locker room, she threatened to take a picture of me while I was naked . I was not aware of a policy prohibiting cell phone use in the locker rooms. The policy is very poorly publicized. I’ve observed rampant cell phone use in the locker room. In fact, there was another member who was looking at her phone just a few feet away, but I was the one targeted and threatened. In November, another member who is also Asian, approached me, telling that she had just experienced a similar unprovoked attack- from this same member for looking at her phone. We met with management who imposed a brief suspension on the aggressor. But what I find most disappointing was management’s unwillingness to address- or even acknowledge the racial undertone running through these two incidents. Has anyone else out there had a similar experience at this facility?

I’ve been a member of the Sonoma County Family YMCA for 24 years, and I never expected to feel unsafe there. But after an unprovoked, aggressive confrontation in the women’s locker room — and the YMCA’s lack of meaningful response — that’s exactly what happened. Weeks went by with no action. No suspension, no accountability — just incident reports and “don’t do it again.” Only after I discovered another Asian-American woman had been targeted by the same member, and we requested a joint meeting a month later, did the Y finally act. Their solution? A 2-week suspension for the aggressor. Inconsequential and dismissive. The emotional fallout has been real: insomnia, anxiety, and feeling abandoned by a place I called home for half my adult life. A community member put it perfectly: “If someone is confrontational, that’s on them. If it continues and nothing gets done, that’s on the Y.” People deserve to feel safe at their gym. I didn’t — and the Y’s response made it worse, not better. I strongly advise you to go elsewhere.

I joined the Santa Rosa YMCA 35 years ago when we first settled in Santa Rosa. My wife and I feel that we are now over 77 years young, thanks in large part to our regular workouts at the Y. Over the years I have seen many significant improvements in both the facility and its social support programs. I remain very impressed by the consistent and dedicated work of the whole Y team, many of whom we have known for several decades. They give us a very attractive and affordable place to exercise with a large variety of well run specially designed exercise options. I use the modern gym equipment two or three times a week. My wife, Tara prefers the chair yoga class which is well run and provides her with an all around calisthenic experience. The fact that our very reasonable family dues also goes to support local kids with social support activities like holiday events and summer camps makes us feel pleased and even more committed to this valuable community treasure. If you think you too could use a clean, friendly, effective place to exercise, join us. I know you will feel welcomed. Geza Kadar
