Davenport and Harris Funeral Home Incorporated was established in September 12, 1899 and is the oldest African American family owned and operated business in the State of Alabama.Charles Morgan "Boss" Harris, founder, was born in Mobile, Alabama on August 3, 1871. Charles, along with his sister Hattie C. Davenport, moved to Montgomery, Alabama in 1889. After working at several odd jobs and attending Alabama State Normal School for Colored, he began working for the late Henry A. Loveless Undertaking Company.In 1893, Charles M. "Boss" Harris married Mattie Bell Saffold of Selma, Alabama. Later in that same year, Charles, who had by now earned the nickname "Boss, " moved with his new bride and his sister Hattie to Birmingham.

Five stars isn’t enough to give this true God made company their well deserved accolades. When I tell you the service and all parties involved provided my family with the most respectful and caring service for my mother’s homegoing. They made is so much easier and to put the wishes of our family before their rules to accommodate us what nothing but a true act of God. How they handled my mother’s remains were remarkable. I have the utmost respect for Davenport and Harris and all their staff I will never forget! Thank you so much and I highly recommend them to you to entrust them with your loved one as they are spirit led and truly have the heart of God and I speak blessings upon blessing for their business and their personal lives. Outstanding service and we love you all and appreciate you all so very much! Hats off to the programs that were done we have gotten so many compliments on everything you did was in absolute excellence. No one is better than Davenport and Harris in my eyes! overall the service was professional, until one of the funeral directors by the name of brittney decided she would call a family member who lives in another state a conversation i thought was private, that cause mess and confusion between the relative and I. I felt it was very very unprofessional to call and start mess! Very disappointed.
