Built in 1962 to consolidate the Physical Plant functions in one location, the Physical Plant Building was developed by Sam F. Brewster, Director of the Department of Physical Plant. Constructed on two levels with an inner and outer court, the Brewster Building has a unique design that allows shops at all levels to have dock access. Until 1974 the building was known simply as the Physical Plant Building but in 1974, at the retirement of Sam F. Brewster, the building was renamed in his honor.Nearly identical to its original use in 1962, today the Sam F. Brewster Building is home to the Physical Facilities Department administrative offices as well as a warehouse and various shops.
