  We started out having a really positive experience at Primrose, which is what makes this review disappointing to write. There are some phenomenal teachers here, and we always felt the facility itself was safe, clean, and generally an acceptable environment for our kids. Several teachers clearly cared deeply about our children, and we are very thankful for them. Unfortunately, our experience steadily declined over time. One of the biggest issues was inconsistency. Classroom transitions were often poorly managed, and drop-off and pickup became frustrating because our kids were frequently moved between different classrooms and teachers. Instead of a predictable routine, parents were often left trying to figure out where their child was supposed to be, creating unnecessary confusion for parents and, in our experience, anxiety for the children. We generally liked the Primrose curriculum and educational approach, but the execution seemed highly dependent on the individual teacher. Some teachers were excellent, while the quality and consistency with others was noticeably different. At times, the communication made it difficult to know how meaningful the curriculum reports actually were. This was particularly concerning in the infant program. On one occasion, we received a daily curriculum report saying our child had completed an art activity. When we later asked the teacher about the artwork, she had no idea what we were referring to or what had been sent in the report (this is not the only example) Experiences like that made us question how closely the reported curriculum reflected what was actually happening in the classroom. We also became increasingly uncomfortable with the amount of time infants appeared to spend in bouncers or similar equipment, and overall we felt there was significantly less developmental engagement in the infant program than we had experienced with our older children. We raised this concern in writing on three separate occasions, and after each discussion we observed the same issue again within days. Our eventual solution was to request that our infant move to the next classroom earlier than originally planned. Programming and nutrition also seemed to decline noticeably over time. Events and activities that had been part of the experience disappeared or were scaled back. Spring Fling was not held, we noticed a decline in the upkeep of the outdoor areas, and when Durham’s drought meant Splash Day could not happen, no alternative activity was offered to our knowledge. We also felt the food and snack offerings changed over time. Earlier in our experience, the options seemed more consistent with what we expected from a premium daycare, while later offerings appeared to include more processed and pre-packaged foods. Individually these things may seem minor, but together they contributed to the sense that the overall experience was being reduced while tuition continued increasing. Our biggest frustration was ultimately the disconnect between the premium price and the consistency of the experience. We were willing to make a significant financial commitment to our children’s care and early education because we believed Primrose offered something meaningfully better than a typical daycare. By the end, we were no longer convinced the experience consistently justified that premium. There are still teachers at this school of whom we think very highly, and we never felt our children were in an unsafe environment. But for a premium-priced preschool, we expected stronger consistency, communication, programming, developmental engagement, and overall execution than what we ultimately experienced.

  Our twin girls have been so happy at Primrose from day one. The team at Primrose take a genuine, fun loving approach to their work which has resulted in our girls thriving there. We could not be happier with our decision to choose Primrose.
