RightStart™ Mathematics will help your child understand, apply and enjoy mathematics using games to learn concepts, strategies, and to practice math facts. This unique program uses visualization of quantities, de-emphasizes counting, and provides strategies (visual pictures) for learning the facts. Place value is introduced early to solidify the children’s understanding. The primary learning tool is the Cotter Abacus, a specially designed two-sided abacus that is kinesthetic and visual.

We used Right Start Mathematics for Kindergarten and 1st grade and loved it. The lessons plans are easy to follow, set up in a logical way, and I'm so grateful for the number sense my kids have! Best choice to teach math to young kids in a tangible, useful, practical, and lasting way.

This has been a great curriculum. I have used it with all five of my children. It truly teaches number sense and strategies - not just algorithms. Students are lead to discover why we have theorems and shortcuts instead of just being given them and made to execute by rote memory.

Best math program for k-8. By far! The manipulatives, the rigor, the critical thinking, the math projects, the hands on element, the mental math foundations — I love everything about Rightstart and use it in my work daily.

We use the RightStart Math curriculum with my high functioning autistic son and are on Level C. The positives of the curriculum is that it is hands on and every manipulative is worth the effort in helping visualize math and math concepts. It also comes with math games which is the best way to learn math instead of doing a worksheet. My son was really struggling in math until we started RightStart Math curriculum - it was the only thing that made math concepts click for him. If we had started this earlier, I am certain he would not have struggled with identifying 7's and 8's. The teacher book is perfect - tells you what to say and what all the answers are - it makes it really easy for us homeschooling moms and teachers. We do the vast majority of this curriculum orally - my son does not write out the problems or on worksheets UNLESS its a quiz, geometry drawing, or an area he needs the extra practice. He loves that he can just lay on the floor and have me read problems and can solve them in his head - he hates to write. If problems have bigger numbers I write them on a piece of paper and hand it to him (numbers that are 1000+). So far there are only a couple word problems at a time so the workload does not overload kids either. The manipulatives and games are a once and done purchase for the most part and then you use them every year. The downsides of this curriculum, and why it gets 3/5 stars, is that it does not do a great job of really ensuring the child knows their math facts. So we have to do this curriculum AND Math-U-See at the same time because my son needs BOTH to understand math concepts and to learn his math facts. So having to buy two full sets of math curriculum is expensive, but its what works for my son. Also, as a side note, when I have recommended this curriculum to others, they have chosen something else every time. They found it hard to just jump into in the middle and switch from another curriculum. They feel it has a steep learning curve if you have not been using it from the start because it is so very different from other math curriculum. Some don't want the extra cost and storage of all manipulatives and card games; some even felt those would be a distraction (though I had no issue with that since I only gave my son the tools as needed in the moment to do the work then removed them as soon as we were done). Also, there are a lot of lessons for each level and you really need to do all of them before moving up, which means you do this curriculum daily and some families did not want that much commitment. But I feel, consistent practice ensures learning. So though this is an excellent math curriculum and drastically changed my son's outlook and math performance, I am finding that many out there are not willing to take the chance to make it work.
