  My child has been attending sessions throughout the summer and has truly enjoyed his learning sessions at Sylvan Olivette. He’s says all of the teachers are GREAT and has maintained his enthusiasm for going. We are sure he is going to be more prepared for middle school this year!

  I brought my child in for an assessment yesterday, and I did not expect to leave feeling worse than I did when I brought him in. I initially chose Sylvan for tutoring because it is a household name. They have been in the community for years, and I felt comfortable with this choice. In order to begin tutoring, my child had to first take an assessment to determine his specific learning plan. He took the assessment in the room with the director of education. After an hour and twenty minutes had passed, she left the room and went into someone else's office. I could see her swinging her arms in frustration. Soon after, she called me into a room and asked me if my child had ADHD or an IEP. She proceeded to tell me that the amount of time that he is taking to complete the assessment is "unheard of" and that it has never taken a child that long to complete an assessment. The way that she approached the situation made me feel horrible. Imagine knowing that your child needs additional help, and taking them to a place that is supposed to offer that help, only to be made to feel hopeless. When the test ended, she proceeded to ask invasive questions about my child's educational history in front of him. One of the goals of Sylvan learning center is to instill confidence, and her attitude suggested to me that her biases and assumptions may be conveyed to the individuals that will be tutoring my child. As an educator myself, I would never speak to a parent the way that she spoke to me. She could have easily said "The test is taking longer than expected, why don't we wrap up the reading and reschedule for the math portion? And if you don't mind I'd like to schedule some time to talk more about his educational background, before we begin tutoring." I have decided to take my business elsewhere, as I did not feel that it was a safe environment for my child's confidence.

  My husband and I were looking for academic assistance for one of our children when she was in 8th grade.. I researched the matter thoroughly and called and spoke to the director. My husband and I were impressed from the outset with their compassion, advocacy, catering to different learning styles, curriculum, and willingness to be flexible. We dragged our child in kicking and screaming at the end of 8th grade. She was 2 years and 2 months behind her grade level in reading and was a C student at the time. Within a year she caught up to her grade level in reading. She continued to go weekly all through high school for different things (math assistance, ACT prep, essay writing, study skills - you name it.) By mid sophomore year she was requesting to go more often and by the end of sophomore year when she could drive she would go as often as she needed to achieve her goals. Not only was she accepted at 7/7 colleges but she finished her senior year with a 4.0 and will be attending DePaul University Chicago in the fall. She could not have accomplished this without Sylvan Olivette and especially without the staff there. Her original teacher is now the director and he is phenomenal! We have a second child we plan on starting there this summer for ACT prep. I would highly recommend Sylvan to anyone whose child needs structure, rigor, and a push.
