I attended the 12-hour Security Guard Training at Security Training Academy in April 2026, and it was an excellent experience. The instructor was knowledgeable, the material was clear and practical, and the training was engaging. I left feeling confident and well-prepared. Highly recommended! Victor.

I attended the 3-night security training course with Security Training Academy and the experience was extremely unprofessional. Within the first portion of the class, the instructor clearly stated that taking pictures of the slides was allowed (no video or audio recording). That guidance directly contradicted what happened on the second night, when an individual who later claimed to be the owner abruptly interrupted the class and aggressively singled me out by name, threatening to remove me for doing exactly what we had been told was permitted. There was no attempt to clarify policy, no professionalism, and no respect shown. The situation escalated unnecessarily and created a hostile learning environment. I deescalated and continued the course, but the damage to the overall experience was already done. To make matters worse, once that individual left, the instructor admitted that we had, in fact, been told photos were allowed and apologized. That inconsistency and lack of leadership speaks volumes. As someone who coordinates trainings for a large security company and was actively evaluating potential providers, I can say this experience alone disqualified this organization from consideration. Consistency, professionalism, and clear communication are basic expectations for any training environment, and this fell short on all three. I would not recommend. Update: After my original review was posted, the business initially responded with an apology acknowledging “unprofessional behavior” and “conflicting guidance” regarding photography. After I filed a BBB complaint, that response was edited and replaced with a contradictory version accusing me of misconduct and improper motives. Notably, the owner also publicly referenced employer information taken from my private enrollment paperwork and incorrectly identified the company entirely, further demonstrating carelessness and poor judgment. The revised response includes informal remarks such as “smh” and unsupported accusations, which in my opinion only reinforce the lack of professionalism described in my review. Rather than consistently addressing the underlying issue of conflicting instructor guidance and aggressive handling of the situation, the business chose to change its narrative after the fact. My original concerns remain unchanged. This is disappointing.

Real Training — Worth the Commitment I don’t usually write long reviews, but this one is worth it. My experience with Security Training Academy (STA) was genuinely different from other programs I’ve attended. I had previously completed unarmed guard training in both Maryland and Virginia, but those programs didn’t leave me with the level of practical understanding I was looking for. I wanted a Special Police Officer (SPO) course that focused on real skills and how the job actually works—not just a certificate at the end. After researching several options, STA stood out right away. To be honest, I was even willing to drive nearly two hours each way just to attend. That’s how confident I felt about the program before starting. Later, I found out that part of the training could be completed online, with only the essential hands-on components—like arrest procedures and firearms training—done in person. That made things much more manageable without taking away from the quality of the training. What I noticed immediately was the structure and expectations. This is not a “just show up and pass” type of program. You’re expected to stay on track, complete assignments, and actually understand the material. The training resources—both printed and video—are organized and useful, even after the course ends. The instructors focus heavily on real-world application, which makes a big difference. By the end of the program, you feel more prepared for actual job responsibilities, not just the exam. From my experience, this program is a good fit for people who are serious about learning and willing to put in the effort. If someone is only looking for an easy certificate, this may not be the right place. But if you want structured, hands-on training that prepares you for real work as an SPO, STA is a solid choice.

STA. Is a great place for all your security and SPO training. My trainer Chuck keeped class up beat. Willing to answer any questions we had. Finished my classes feeling that I had learned a lot. But also ever time I have to get my recertifications I learn something new. I would recommend STA to anyone needing there recertification. Or any kind of training STA is the place to go.

This is an establishment with knowledgeable and enjoyable classes that keep you engaged. The staff are well-informed and are quick to troubleshoot. My instructor, Chuck, is engaging, honest and informative. Never have my questions went unanswered nor have I ever felt deceived with false hope within the general field of security. I have no frame of reference to compare, but the classes are far more organized than the first and second parts of Basic Combat Training.
