My eldest child was one of the first kids enrolled at this daycare, and we loved it at the start. As time went on, though, we started having a lot of trouble. I think they, like all places, were having some staffing issues. We noticed that my son went from being very enthusiastic about going to daycare to hating it. Then the biting started. My son was bitten by other kids (not just one), which started a year long biting issue with my child. He bit about one kid per day for months. The teachers in the classroom had no idea how to handle it, and the director downplayed the issue. I asked if he needed early intervention multiple times, offered to come get him when he bit, sent chewy toys, got his doctor involved. We didn’t have the problem at home. Then, one day, he bit all of his classmates in a 10 minute span. How a 18 month old bites all his classmates in 10 minutes with adequate supervision is beyond me. The director suggested biting him back (!!!!). That night, I made a first steps referral myself. There was a 4 month waitlist. Had they suggested a referral 4 months prior when he started this behavior, he would have been seen at that point. All through this, we had not met his classroom teacher because we were not allowed to enter the building due to Covid protocols. I requested a meeting with the classroom teacher and the director. The director refused to give us access to the teacher, and instead told us that if he bit one more time he would be expelled. She said it was a money issue—another family was threatening to pull their child. So, we pulled ours. In the final phone call we had with the director, she told us that she had been removing him from the classroom when he bit. His therapist has since suggested that this rewarded the behavior, and that it would have been better handled in the classroom (as I thought was being done). In this final call, the director also welcomed us to bring our new baby who was due two months later when he was born. I am so sad for this whole situation. The director is a nice person, but was clearly not given the resources she needed by her corporate backers. Not enough teachers. Teachers with inadequate training. Lack of behavioral intervention training. My son and my family suffered the results of Kindercare’s lack of care for their staff members. Do better, Kindercare.
