Extremely unprofessional behavior, letting petty personal pride disrupt the operation of not only their own operations, but costing me a $800 run and delaying delivery to the destination, which affects everyone else waiting on the equipment to arrive.
I was contracted to transport a 500KW generator from here. After hooking up, I began my inspection of the equipment to ensure it would not be damaged in transit, not pose a hazard to my truck, nor cause harm to anyone or anything on the roadway. During this inspection, an employee came over and asked what I was doing, I informed him. He told me there wasn't any need, it is ready to go. I told him no, that it is part of my job to ensure everything is safe because if anything does happen to it, I am the one responsible. I continued my inspection, and found a couple issues that I had concerns with, and tended to them. One was loose items in the back that could have damaged a valve, another was an unsecured ladder which would have come down onto the road or my truck while driving.
While doing so, said employee was standing close by and watching, making occasional comments about how I didn't need to do anything, that "they aren't paying me to maintain it, just move it"
After doing this and getting into my truck, I was ready to leave, in gear brakes released, when I saw him coming back with the office attendant. Office attendant asked me to wait and made a call. After a minute or so, he told me there were safety concerns and that I was not allowed to run the load. When I asked what the particular concerns were, the first guy said my tires were bald. I check my equipment regularly with the proper tools, using a tread depth and pressure gauge, and I keep up on what is and is not legal with my truck. Being an antique with original equipment, some of the rules for it are different. My tires are still legal to use. Guy refused to care or listen and just kept repeating to unhook and leave.
I told him that he was costing me the load that would get me home to see my family, which I only get to see a few days a month...
And he just laughed.
I unhooked and got out from under it then went up to the office so I could get the paperwork cleared up, and they both refused to leave the office, come to the door or anything. Instead, through the various intermediaries and contacts that is trucking, I was told to leave the property immediately.
I did my job to ensure both their equipment and the roadways would be safe, because that is supposed to be done. Even in the face of his gross disrespect and petty malfeasance, I kept my calm and didn't stoop to his level.
