I recently needed an emergency plumbing repair at my rental property in Johnson City, TN. The drywall was already opened, and the problem was an accessible copper pipe with a pinhole leak.
Roto-Rooter initially quoted me $800, then generously offered what felt like an insulting "discount" that brought the price down to $672.
The technician completed the repair, took pictures, and prepared the invoice in approximately 50 minutes.
Let that sink in. $672 for less than an hour on-site, including paperwork.
Afterward, I spoke with other local plumbing contractors who indicated that a comparable repair would typically cost approximately $300–$350. Unfortunately, those contractors weren't available when I needed immediate assistance.
I understand that emergency service comes at a premium. I have a background in the electrical construction industry, so I'm familiar with labor rates, overhead, materials, and what it takes to operate a contracting business. However, there's a difference between charging a reasonable premium for emergency service and pricing that feels excessive for the work performed.
To make matters worse, this was the same technician I previously paid $189 to address a drain issue that was never fully resolved. Between these two visits, I've spent $861 and am left deeply dissatisfied with the value received.
My advice to anyone considering Roto-Rooter: LEARN FROM MY EXPERIENCE.
Unless your house is actively flooding and you cannot safely contain the situation, take the time to call multiple local plumbers before agreeing to their pricing. I sincerely regret not doing so.
While the technician successfully repaired the pipe, I cannot recommend Roto-Rooter based on my experience. Prompt service is valuable, but it does not automatically justify any price a company chooses to charge.
To Roto-Rooter management: You're welcome to contact me directly to discuss these charges and whether a reasonable price adjustment is warranted. I'd appreciate an opportunity to resolve my dissatisfaction.
Until then, I'll be sharing my experience so other homeowners and landlords can make informed decisions before spending their hard-earned money.
One expensive lesson learned. I will not be using Roto-Rooter again.

Two of the most professionally men I’ve seen in this business! Told me what was wrong and showed me with their camera. Cost? What they said is what I paid. Straight forward. No but this or that. Great job!

Meant to leave this review like 2 years ago. So, I went through a bit of a circus trying to get two big jobs done after 1) buying a house that had a fault under the yard causing a massive clog and 2) that clog caused older pipes to burst.
What followed was a fair amount of phone calls over a month, never quite knowing who I would talk to---and I talked to just about everyone in every department in the process, including two people in management---and as a result there was some confusion about the work that was getting done, but that got sorted out. At every single point, I spoke to someone kind, polite, and competent. They were all willing to listen to and work with me. The professionalism of the office staff alone in this frustrating time would have made this review 5 stars.
But Shawn and the other guys did a phenomenal job on top of it. When he first answered my emergency call on a Saturday evening, I knew that this guy was fantastic, and I had no fears at all about him working in my house for hours while I was at work. They did the job exactly as they said they would, left no mess, and were always friendly on top of it all. Definitely going to call them next time I need a plumber, which hopefully won't be for a long, long time.
