Unprofessional, Disorganized, and Forced Upselling I had an incredibly disappointing experience with Menser Inc in Somerset while trying to coordinate a borough-mandated sewer pressure test for a home sale. The process was plagued by poor communication from the start. After an initial inquiry on June 1st, I was promised a site visit and estimate. By June 24th—having heard nothing—I called back to find they had completely forgotten about the request, with staff casually stating that "someone falls through the cracks" occasionally. To rectify their mistake, I accommodated a last-minute meeting on June 26th, which required a 70-minute drive one way on my part. Rather than providing the straightforward viewport installation estimate I asked for, they used the opportunity to push a mandatory camera scope costing a minimum of $750 ($450 for the scope plus $200/hour labor). When I asked to bypass the unnecessary scope and just receive the view port installation estimate, they refused the work and walked away from the job entirely. Menser delayed my home sale process by nearly a month due to internal disorganization, wasted nearly two and a half hours of my time in driving alone, and ultimately refused service when I wouldn't agree to an expensive, unrelated upsell. They are clearly exploiting home sellers who are trapped by new borough regulations. Look elsewhere if you value efficiency and transparent pricing.

I had a decent experience with Menser’s with a fairly straightforward issue once before, so I called them about a leak from my indirect water heater tank. They responded quickly, and a tech came out, took a picture, and left — no work done. Later, I got a quote for over $5,000 and a $185 bill for the five-minute visit. It seemed higher than I expected, and I didn’t expect a bill for an estimate. I got a second estimate of $3,475 for the same job, same tank, same scope, etc. (with no charge for the visit). Out of courtesy, I called Menser to let them know I was going with another plumber. When asked why, I said their price was much higher. I also asked about the $185 charge to get an estimate. The woman seemed concerned about the high estimate and the charge for it and said she’d speak with the current owner and follow up. But no one called me back. The follow-up was just a mailed bill for $185 for a “service call.” I called again and spoke with a different person and was met with defensiveness this time. She told me they charge $185 for any visit, even if no work is done, and implied that I likely got poor quality work for that lower price (for the record, Shane Shaffer Inc did a great job). I told her that it is bad for their business from a customer's perspective. Why would I ever call them again? The higher quote wouldn’t keep me from calling them again, but knowing I’ll pay $185 for the quote will. The woman said she’d mention that to the owner but that I needed to pay the bill. No follow-up. So, I guess they got $185 but lost me as a future customer. It’s not a reflection of their work but a matter of value and customer experience. One of my friends with whom I shared this, laughed and said, “Well, even paying them $185 to not do the work, you came out way ahead.” It's a good point and funny, too. But next time, I'll come out ahead even more by not calling Menser's. Unless you’re willing to pay a lot for an estimate that will likely be much higher than other good companies, I recommend you don’t call them either.

During the coldest days of January, my furnace decided to stop working. I needed specific parts to fix it and I could not find them. I called Mensers' and explained my situation. They did not have the parts I needed on hand. However, Joan worked diligently until she found what I needed. Thank you Joan!! Kudos to Joan and the menser team!!
