It also had a musty smell so we could never use it for much of anything. We decided to see if encasing the walls and ceiling in foam might work to help Climate Control the room so we could use it for extra storage. I also filled the couple of floor cracks and painted the floor with a waterproof sand paint for extra protection from dampness and to add traction. It's been a year and the foam encased room is holding up beautifully! The musty smell is completely gone and the room stays cool in summer and warmer in the winter. I do keep a fan blowing in there in the summer to help keep the humidity lower and help evaporate any moisture that might happen, and so far, it's worked great! A small room, storage facility rental (smaller than our old coal room) would have cost us over $1200/yr. The foam encasing of the room paid for itself in less than a year! And I have the added convenience of being able to store stuff right in my home so I have access when needed. The people at TrueFoam were pleasant and easy to work with. They took care with my home and cleaned up after themselves after the job was done. It was almost no disruption to my day to have them work on the coal cellar.
