I am in no way an expert on AC repair. My 27 year old central air system stopped getting cold and I knew that my relay in the air handler may have been faulty, so I first tried changing that. Peter at Ferguson in Farmingdale had a very hard time finding that part. I gave him the model and serial numbers but because it was an old unit, it wasn't coming up in their computer. But he persisted and put in a bunch of numbers from the incomplete number on the relay I brought with me. His persistence paid off and he found the part! The only downside was I needed to go to the Deer Park warehouse to pick it up. Unfortunately, it wasn't the cause of the compressor not working and cooling the freon. When I went back the second time to get a new transformer because it was the only other changeable part in the handler, Peter asked me what was going on with the unit. When I told him it everything was going on, but the compressor motor wasn't kicking on, he said it was more likely the capacitor on the outside of the compressor was bad. He noted that's what turns the compressor motor on and off when the thermostat hits the set temperature. I grabbed the capacitor and the transformer, just in case. He also told me to make sure all the power was off to the compressor, air handler and the service blade was out of the box outside near the compressor. I was leary about changing the capacitor because they can hold a charge and shock you if not discharged it properly. I knew that much from my guitar amplifiers! I was going to wait for a friend who does HVAC to check it the next day. I let it go until the next morning and decided to change the capacitor myself. Running a screwdriver across the terminals on the old capacitor didn't spark at all. But I still carefully removed it and put in the new one. As soon as I turned it on, it got cold as ice, literally. If Peter didn't ask me what was going on, I might not have fixed it. He was just so great in taking the time to find the first part and suggesting to change the capacitor first to see if that helps. It was like the old days when you went to the local hardware store and the owner walked you through the project or repair. I know to people who are knowledgeable of this subject, it's probably obvious and an easy diagnosis. But for a first time DIYer, it was a godsend. It also wound up being a $75 fix for both parts. Peter was very knowledgeable and patient in helping me. It's rare to find people who go the extra mile to help customers these days. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would!

Came in as a roofer working on a gas hot vent pipe chimney replacement and had no issues getting the help I needed. Ryan was understanding from the start and didn’t make me feel rushed. When I had to make a second trip back for additional parts, same great attitude. It’s rare to find a supply house where the staff actually cares about getting you the right stuff. Appreciate the effort guys.
