Types of Residential Elevators

Traction elevators are the most common type of elevator. They can be geared or gearless and both model types are driven by alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) electrical motors. In geared elevators, there is a gearbox attached to the motor that drives the wheel and moves the ropes.

Hydraulic Elevators

Hydraulic elevators are supported by a piston at the bottom of the elevator that pushes the elevator up as an electric motor forces oil or another hydraulic fluid into the piston. The elevator descends as a valve releases the fluid from the piston. Roped Hydraulic Elevators use a combination of ropes and a piston to move the elevator. Maximum travel distance is about 60 feet. Hydraulic elevators have a low initial cost and their ongoing maintenance costs are lower compared to the other elevator types. However, hydraulic elevators use more energy than other types of elevators because the electric motor works against gravity as it forces hydraulic fluid into the piston. A major drawback of hydraulic elevators is that the hydraulic fluid can sometimes leak, which can cause a serious environmental hazard. The environmental risk and high energy use are two main reasons that hydraulic elevators are not being installed as often as in the past.

Machine-Room-Less (MRL) Elevators

Machine-Room-Less Elevators are traction elevators that do not have a dedicated machine room above the elevator shaft. The machine sits in the override space and is accessed from the top of the elevator cab when maintenance or repairs are required. The control boxes are located in a control room that is adjacent to the elevator shaft on the highest landing and within around 150 feet of the machine. MRL elevators are comparable to geared traction elevators in terms of initial and maintenance costs, but they have relatively low energy consumption compared to geared elevators. They are energy efficient, require less space, and their operation and reliability are on par with gear-less traction elevators.

We had a wonderful experience with Atlantic Elevator Repair, especially our service technician, Derek! We were renting a house in the OBX and began having an issue with the elevator getting stuck at the top floor with the doors not opening. As someone who is completely wheelchair dependent, taking the stairs isn’t an option, so having the elevator doors not open can be incredibly anxiety-producing. Derek was amazing! He was friendly, knowledgeable, patient, and did a great job troubleshooting the problem. He went above and beyond by checking all three elevator doors, even though we were only having an issue with one. He took the time to answer all of our questions, never rushed us, and made sure we felt comfortable with everything before he left. Thank you, Derek, for your kindness, patience, and excellent service. It truly made a difference and was very much appreciated!

We received amazing support from our technician, Derek. Professional and kind. Wonderful attention to detail. He went over and above to not only check the current issue, but verify other floors would not encounter the same issue. Having a handicapped wife means this meant a lot to us. I can't express how great our experience was with Atlantic Elevators and Derek. I'd give them 10 stars if I could.

My wife and I are pleased to publish this review because of our years long relationship and experiences with the hard working, professional and skilled staff at Atlantic Elevator. In June 2026 we experienced the effects of a lightning strike at our home - our LEV elevator did not survive. That same afternoon Vaughn and Joey confirmed the diagnosis of the extensive damage. Within days, Joey and Morgan gave us the options on what was available since OEM parts were no longer available and aftermarket ones were in short supply and somewhat problematic. This information and timely service made our decision to replace our original system much easier, as Atlantic Elevator had been the original installer of the LEV system and had serviced it faithfully since the beginning. The new Savaria system has now been installed and is working perfectly. Of note, was how well Rocky and Vaughn worked together to prepare us and our home for the removal of the old system by explaining each step in the process, covering the floors with protective coverings, and organizing the tools needed, and showing the best pathway for extraction of the large rail system components so as to not damage the home, furnishings or impede our use of the home during the four days need to complete the project. The explanations given to us during the process and the thoughtful modifications to the support structure of the shaft were very important to assuage our concerns we were getting a quality work product and a safe and fully functional replacement unit. For all of this, we are grateful for your service and persistence in keeping us informed each step of the way and getting us restored in a timely manner and at a reasonable cost. Now we can get our groceries to the third level without stopping to catch our breath! Well done! Thank you! Mike and Barb

Vaughn and Rocky were SO helpful and patient with two novices. They did not rush through the instructions, spent time answering our questions and noted important safety features, Couldn’t ask for better service.
