This review is especially for those homeowners whom have the same perspective that my wife and I had: Cheap now, expensive later. We wanted to deal with a reputable company, that had workman's compensation insurance in addition to "standard" coverage. But where do you start when there are so many reviews out there and half of them are fake!?
Well we started with using Trex.com since we knew we wanted a Trex deck. They classify local builders as either Platinum (the best), Gold, or Pro. California Custom Decks was the only Platinum builder. So after researching them online, I paid them a visit. I quickly felt that the sales guy didn't really care and didn't seem like someone I wanted to deal with. We didn't really want treated wood and knew that the carpenter bees would just be all over the untreated portion, like our current deck.
We then contacted the Gold ranked builder, Outdoor Living, via their website. Within a few days I received a response from Tommy. He provided me a quote for roughly the same deck as the first place and it was about 25% more. At first, we thought NO WAY! But then we started to do a lot of research on steel decks. No issues, obviously, with carpenter bees, and the upfront cost gets amortized away by the future savings due to the near zero maintenance.
I emailed Tommy a month or so later. I bombarded him with questions and scenarios about EVERYTHING. I am a very detailed person that cares very much about specifics in the contract, timeline, pros and cons of different build styles, etc. Tommy was patient with me and learned to anticipate certain concerns I may have based on my personality. I truly think Tommy and I had near 100 emails back and forth throughout the entire process.
After being well educated by Tommy on the process and various materials, my wife and I designed our deck on paper and Tommy said it could be built. Go with Trex Signature Ocracoke for your decking boards!! I cannot stress this enough! Not only is it so beautiful, but I also watched a YouTube video where a man took a nail and violently scratched various grades of Trex with a nail. Of course, all of them were damaged. But the Ocracoke was incredibly more resilient. This again is an example of upfront cost now to save money in the future. We went with Westbury 42 " railing with ball caps and we couldn't be happier. We're a tall family and those 36 " railings are just too low for us.
I was told it would take 6 months to start the project from signing and it was right on schedule. Sean and Nathan were my two builders. Two skilled carpenters that were in constant communication with me as I was checking in with them throughout the project. I will say this; don't complain to the carpenter about something on stage 3 when you are now at stage 5. Bring up the concern as soon as you see it so that it can be addressed at the appropriate time. We would get them some lunches and other little things throughout the process and gave them a little tip in the end. They had really clean lines at the 45-degree angle and that is not easy. A lot of this is not easy and it makes you understand the cost. There's a photo of them below posing proud in front of their completed project.
The process was extremely streamlined. Our old deck was not only completely demolished within 3 hours of their arrival, but all the debris was fully removed from my property by 1pm the first day!! They have trucks coming throughout the process to remove things and bring materials. My property was never "overstocked" if you will. Things were there when they were going to be needed. The city inspector told me that my deck could support 2 full sized trucks! The inspector himself loved the deck.
Well, they did a great job and the pictures are below! Just an absolutely beautiful, well crafted, steel deck! Even the underside is incredible to look at. When I'm out on my deck these days, I spend more time staring at the deck than the nice view I have from my deck.

Popped in to look and learn about composite decking. The gentleman that helped me (I’m so sorry I don’t recall his name) was super helpful and spent good time educating me. They have a nice showroom so you can see the products and interact with them. I left with a slew of samples and a sheet which laid out prices so no surprises!
