Jon was the best repairman ever! He really knew his stuff. He was personable, easy to talk to and he answered all my questions. He tested our tap water and our Reverse Osmosis filtered drinking water. He provided a detailed evaluation form for the softener system, the drinking water RO, and the filters. The form is like when you get your car serviced; green is good, yellow for soon, and red for gotta-fix-it-now. He gave me three options; two repair possibilities and the third, buying a new system - one that he recommends. Then he showed me how to limp the system along the next few days until I made my decision. Jon put in a lot of time and work. The $98 service charge was a bargain!
But next comes the hard part. We have well water, very high iron content, hard water. Our water conditioning system has one pair of tanks that handles the bigger particles before it goes into the softener filtration set. It's 20 years old. I called for service because the water was continually running and didn't appear to be reaching the salt. Jon took the system all apart. There was iron sediment everywhere in the heads, gunking up the works, and affecting the machines ability to "flip the switch".
With the repair options, putting new parts on an old system, ($4,000 and $7,000 options) there is only a one-year guarantee. But if we buy a new system ($9,000-$12,000 yipes) there is a 10-year guarantee. Maybe the sales rep will offer really good deal...
