Question 1

Do you repair skylights that were installed by another company?

Accepted Answer

We perform repairs exclusively on skylights that were originally installed by our team. If you have a skylight installed by another contractor that is leaking, damaged, or showing signs of age, we are available to evaluate its condition and review your available options. In numerous situations, replacing older skylights proves more economical than repairing them. We will recommend the most appropriate solution for your property, which may include installing a replacement skylight, upgrading to a modern energy-efficient unit, or implementing other enhancements to improve performance and minimize future problems. Our objective is to provide you with a dependable, long-term solution that aligns with your requirements and budget.

Question 2

Can skylights be installed on any roofing material?

Accepted Answer

Skylights can be installed on numerous roofing materials, including asphalt shingles, metal roofs, flat roofs, barrel roof tiles, and various other high-profile roofing systems. To determine which skylight options work best with your specific roofing material, we welcome the opportunity to discuss your project with you.

Question 3

How often should skylights be replaced?

Accepted Answer

VELUX skylights typically have a lifespan of 20 to 30 years under normal exposure to weather conditions on your roof. You are not required to wait until a problem develops if your skylight has reached this age. It is advisable to replace it after approximately 30 years, as newer models provide enhanced features and ensure your skylight meets current code requirements.

Question 4

Do VELUX skylights come with shades?

Accepted Answer

Shades are offered in more than 60 colors and patterns with any of our skylights, including:

Room-darkening: Offered for solar-powered models, this double-pleated shade blocks light to darken the room while providing an insulating layer that reduces heat gain during summer and heat loss during winter. Best suited for bedrooms, living rooms, and kitchens.

Light-filtering: The single-pleated light-filtering shades reduce glare by softening and diffusing incoming light, enabling you to benefit from natural light without harsh brightness. Light-filtering skylight shades work well in kitchens, living rooms, and bonus rooms, and are offered for solar-powered models.

Question 5

What are the main differences between solar-powered and electric or manual skylight systems?

Accepted Answer

Solar powered fresh air skylight systems include a solar panel that captures available daylight to recharge a hidden battery, which powers the opening and closing mechanism of the skylight. Electric fresh air skylight systems are connected directly to your home's electrical supply. Both solar-powered and electric models are controlled using a remote control. Manual fresh air skylight systems enable you to open and close your skylight using a telescoping rod for out-of-reach installations or a handle for accessible installations.
