  If you think second opinions, don’t matter, they do. Our AC unit is fairly old and had stopped working. We contacted a local company and after 30 minutes they were already telling us we had to replace the entire thing and that they had a sweet offer that we needed to act on before the end of the month. The next day I got a second opinion from Schaasfma. Best decision we could have made. Mark not only solved the problem but explained in great detail (and easy to understand language) how the system works, what each part was doing, and how we could repair it now and still use it while saving money to replace the entire unit when it truly does fail. He was prompt. He was courteous. He was informative. He saved us a ton of money. Save yourself the time and hassle and call them first. They’re at the top of our list.

  I recently received error notifications from my central air unit and contacted Schaafsma Heating and Cooling for service. They arrived within the scheduled service window, and Mark spent several hours carefully troubleshooting the system and testing multiple components to pinpoint the exact issue instead of just guessing and replacing parts. He eventually discovered that a sensor monitoring the cold condenser pipe was malfunctioning and reporting a temperature of 179 degrees — clearly impossible when the outside temperature was only 67 degrees. The replacement part needed to come from across the state. What really impressed me was the level of customer care they provided. Mark had noted on our account that temperature control was medically important for our household, so getting the system back up quickly mattered. Before Mark had even finished putting the unit back together, his boss David called to let him know they had located the part south of town and that he was personally driving to pick it up and bring it back immediately. That is what I call going above and beyond for a customer. I truly appreciate the professionalism, persistence, communication, and genuine care shown by both Mark and David. Excellent service from start to finish.

  AVOID this business. Based on my experience, most Schaafsma employees are clueless about their work. Our water heater, installed nine years ago, began leaking in fall 2025 and we called Schaafsma for service. Their inspector determined that our heater had failed, so we spent $5000 on a replacement. The leak returned within a day of installation. A third employee appeared and suggested that the previous installation was faulty and fiddled around for a while. The leak returned one day later. Another inspector arrived, and he was the first person who knew what he was doing. He took one look at the expansion tank nearby, lifted it with one hand and explained that it was flooded, no longer functional and the cause of our leak. Another crew installed a replacement tank and the leaking ceased. This is my question: Why didn't the first inspector bother to conduct a simple check of the expansion tank, which is located next to the heater? Checking the tank required just one hand, no tools, and ten seconds of his time. So thanks to Schaafsma we purchased a $5000 heater when our problem was a $375 tank. I explained this fiasco over the phone and agreed to pay their second invoice but I have serious questions about their reliability. Apparently the person on the phone stopped listening after the first half of my reply, because the only response from Schaafsma was to text and mail demands for full payment. Schaafsma places a higher value on $375 than on their reputation, so my check is on the way. If you are satisfied with 1-of-5 odds for a competent employee to show up at your home, Schaafsma will provide just that. If you don't wish to spend $5000 to solve a $375 problem, I strongly recommend that you seek another service.

  Great company to work with. I used them based on a recommendation from a Neighbor. They did a great job installing my heat pump (a/c and furnace system). What I liked best is that they didn’t nickel and dime me after I purchased the system. They went out of their way to make sure I was completely happy. That’s pretty rare nowadays. Because of that, I would highly recommend them. (They installed my system in Grand Haven. )
