It’s generally recommended to pump your septic system every 3 to 5 years. However, factors like system age, household size, garbage disposal use, and laundry habits can affect this. Since every system is unique, feel free to contact us for personalized advice.

Question 5

Should I use a bacteria additive in my septic system?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Beneficial bacteria are essential for breaking down solids in your tank. Many household cleaners kill these bacteria, so using an additive helps maintain a healthy balance in your system.

Question 6

My drains are slow—could it be the septic system?

Accepted Answer

It’s possible. If your system hasn’t been serviced in over six months, we recommend starting there. If the issue continues, we can send a drain cleaner to clear the line from your washer to the septic tank.

Question 7

Is it true I shouldn’t use bleach?

Question 8

Can I use a garbage disposal with a septic system?

Accepted Answer

It’s not recommended. Food particles from disposals don’t break down well and can clog your leach field lines.

Question 9

What does “proper working level” mean?

Accepted Answer

This refers to the water level in your tank aligning with the outlet tee. After pumping, your tank should refill to about one foot from the top. This level allows solids to settle while letting liquid flow to the leach field.

Question 10

What’s the purpose of a septic filter?

Accepted Answer

A septic filter prevents hair, grit, and other debris from entering your leach field. It attaches to the outlet tee and helps protect your system from clogs.

Question 11

Is it safe to use products like Drano for a clogged drain?

Accepted Answer

Not really. These products offer only temporary relief and can harm your septic system by killing beneficial bacteria. Persistent clogs should be handled by a professional using a snake or jetting equipment.

Question 12

What cleaning products are safe for septic systems?

Accepted Answer

Use non-toxic, biodegradable, and non-antibacterial products. Avoid chlorine and ammonia-based cleaners. Most natural cleaners are septic-safe and won’t disrupt the bacterial balance.

Question 13

Can I plant flowers or shrubs over my leach field?

Accepted Answer

No. Only grass should be planted over the leach field. Roots from other plants can clog the lines. Also, avoid covering the area with concrete, asphalt, or other impermeable materials.

Question 14

What’s safe to flush down the toilet?

Accepted Answer

Only flush human waste and toilet paper. Even if labeled “septic safe,” items like baby wipes and cat litter can cause problems because they don’t break down properly.

Question 15

Do energy-efficient faucets help my septic system?

Accepted Answer

Yes! They reduce water usage, which helps prevent overloading your system and supports environmental conservation.
