Although everyone was very nice and responsive, based on my experience, I believe the name Fake HVAC Services is more appropriate for this company.
To their credit, aside from being nice, they were incredibly quick to send a service technician to my property without charging it as an emergency service. However, I specifically called and asked if they worked on my ductless mini-split system (Pioneer) and they said they did. I sent them model numbers for the internal and external units immediately after confirming they worked on those so they would be prepared.
Unfortunately, the tech was NOT prepared or well-informed. The service call is a flat rate for the first hour and a slightly lower rate for each additional hour. The tech was there for 2 hours and it cost $273. However, for those 2 hours there was barely any real service. At least 1 hour of his time was spent googling my specific system and the error codes. He spent additional time going to his truck multiple times for tools and an iPad. Since its an upper level unit in a high-rise with part of the parking lot closed for construction work, he probably spent 30min going back and forth to his truck.
That left the other 30min of the 2hrs he was there for actual work on the unit. To do that, he called the supplier, Pioneer and spoke to their technical team. The results he told me were "not good" and that the repair would be extensive and probably just a band-aid fix. My best bet was to replace the system. I was shocked as the unit is only ~5.5 years old. I asked for quotes for each option.
The repair option was listed in the quote as the "manufacture suggestion" and it was to remove and replace the Electronic Expansion Valves (EEVs). This repair would be for removing/recovering the refrigerant and removing/replacing the EEVs which requires a brazing procedure. I was given a quote of $1260 for this repair.
The replacement option was the "highly recommended" option and would replace the Pioneer units with Bosch units. This was quoted at $9800.
These 2 incredibly expensive options seemed outlandish to me for mini splits that were not very old. So, I called Pioneer myself and discussed the "EEV Replacement" option with their technical team. They told me they would NEVER recommend that. It's almost never, ever the problem and a highly unlikely failure. When I provided the error codes I was seeing on the indoor unit display and outdoor unit board, they told me it was likely the Solenoid caps on the EEVs causing the problem, NOT the EEVs themselves. There were 2 of these caps on my system and the cost was $10 a piece with an expected removal and replacement time of 10 minutes once they outdoor cover was taken off. They also recommended replacing the mother board to be safe at a cost of $180 and since it was a plug and play board it would only take a few minutes. However, they told me if I was onsite with a multi-meter they would provide me a series of tests to go through to determine if I even needed a new motherboard. I decided I would just replace the mother board to be safe. Guess what happened when I took the real manufacturer suggestion directly from Pioneer rather than the one Fake HVAC told me? In about 2 hours the parts were replaced and the unit was all back together, reset, and fully functional with no errors. The total cost of the parts ~$220 with tax. I also found a more reasonable HVAC service person to do the repair (he was also shocked they thought it was the EEVs) and his charge was $175 for 2 hours.
If you have read this far then you have probably already come to this conclusion, but just to be clear I would NOT recommend this company, even if they are nice and responsive. You are better of calling the supplier for inputs and then finding a local, more honest service tech for help.
