John was fantastic to work with to repair an internal wall and remove a chimney in my boston apartment built in the 1870s. He was super responsive and flexible in helping me get approval through my HOA, his team was punctual, the wall looks great, and the work was completed ahead of schedule. Highly recommend!

Budget Masonry and Construction just re-paved our driveway. John and his team lifted the old, uneven bricks, re-graded the entire area to ensure good water flow, and laid down new pavers. John is one of the most responsive contractors I have ever worked with and his team is fast, professional, and attentive to detail. You know John wants you to be happy with his work and he goes above and beyond to make that happen. I would recommend John and his crew to anyone!

I had occasionally experienced water in my basement coming through the foundation, but recently water was coming in more frequently. I called Budget Masonry and spoke with John, who came out the same day to give me an estimate. A large amount of the foundation was in extremely poor condition, necessitating digging a large trench, and pouring new masonry to stop further water exposure. John's crew worked diligently to perform the repair, including working at least three weekend days to complete the job.
I was extremely happy with their work, and would recommend Budget Masonry without reservation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Budget Masonry and Construction
What materials can I use for a patio?
Popular options include concrete (poured or stamped), pavers (concrete, brick, or natural stone), natural stone (such as bluestone or flagstone), and gravel. Each material offers different price points, durability factors, and maintenance requirements. Many of our clients choose pavers because they provide excellent durability and are significantly easier to repair than poured concrete when damage occurs.
How long does installation take?
Installation timeframes vary by project scope: small or simple patios typically require 2-4 days, medium-sized projects generally take 1-2 weeks, while complex designs may extend to several weeks. Please note that weather conditions, material availability, and necessary site preparation can all influence your project timeline.
What prep work is required?
Proper preparation is essential for long-lasting results and includes excavation of the area, addition and compaction of a gravel base, installation of edge restraints, and ensuring correct slope for effective drainage. It's worth noting that inadequate preparation is one of the primary reasons patios fail prematurely.
What masonry services do you offer?
We deliver a comprehensive range of masonry services including brickwork, stone installation, chimney repair, patios, walkways, retaining walls, foundation repair, and various concrete work. Our team is experienced in both residential and commercial projects throughout the Somerville and Greater Boston area.
How long does a typical masonry project take?
Project duration varies significantly based on size and complexity. Minor repairs can often be completed in just a day or two, while larger installations such as patios or retaining walls typically require several days to a few weeks for proper completion.
Do you offer free estimates?
Yes, we provide complimentary, no-obligation estimates for all projects. Our team will assess your specific requirements and supply you with a detailed quote outlining costs and timeframes.
How do I know if my chimney needs repair?
Look for warning signs such as cracked or crumbling bricks/mortar, white staining (efflorescence), rusted damper or firebox, water leaks or dampness near the chimney, and debris in the fireplace. If you notice any of these indicators, we recommend scheduling an inspection. Neglecting these issues can lead to serious problems including interior water damage, structural chimney collapse, increased fire hazards, and potential carbon monoxide leaks. What begins as a small crack can eventually necessitate a complete rebuild.
How long does chimney repair take?
Repair timeframes depend on damage severity: minor fixes typically require just a few hours, moderate repairs usually take 1-2 days, while major rebuilds can extend from several days to a full week. It's important to note that adverse weather conditions may delay exterior work.
When is the best time to install hardscaping?
The optimal installation period runs from spring through fall. In our New England climate, winter installations are typically avoided due to frozen ground conditions which can compromise proper installation techniques and results.
Can I DIY hardscaping?
While simpler projects like gravel paths or small patios can be suitable for DIY enthusiasts, we recommend professional installation for more complex work involving grading, drainage systems, or retaining walls. Professional expertise helps prevent costly mistakes that often occur with DIY attempts on larger hardscaping projects.
