A septic tank is an underground wastewater treatment system commonly used in areas without access to municipal sewer systems. The process begins when wastewater from your home enters the tank through a main drainage pipe. Inside the tank, the wastewater separates into three layers: scum (oils and grease) at the top, effluent (liquid) in the middle, and sludge (solids) at the bottom. Bacteria in the tank break down some of the organic matter. The liquid effluent then flows into a drain field where it's filtered by the soil before reaching groundwater. Regular maintenance, including pumping every 3-5 years, is essential to prevent system failure.
