  A great “traditional” lumber yard and hardware store in the greater Boston/Cambridge area. It carries a number of building quality materials that you are unlikely to find at the big box stores. The lumber in particular is of a much higher grade. On a typical weekday there are numerous trades folks shopping here, who are understandably prioritised. However, the staff is equally patient and helpful working with the weekend warriors shopping for DIY materials.

  I'm a local DIYer. I've come to Arlington Coal & Lumber about 20 times over the past two years for various home improvement needs, and my experiences have always been exceptional - From helpful folks at the register to friendly workers in the lumber yard. I often carry large pieces of lumber home because I don't have a truck, and I never get laughed at or looked down upon (sorry to the reviewers who feel they had that experience). This is an incredible local resource for nearby residents, and I can't recommend it enough. From a directions standpoint: yes, you may walk into the office by accident instead of the actual storefront. It's fairly easy to tell, as you won't see shelves of product around you. Look for the glass doors from the Park Ave sidewalk (brick building) and you'll be in good shape. You order the lumber inside the store before going to pick it up, so I recommend always starting inside.
