We purchased a new AC from Costco and had it installed by Polestar. Andrew from Polestar came by our place to take a look, make measurements and calculations, and sat down to discuss options and estimates with us. He was knowledgeable and patient with our questions. We felt he gave us honest answers. He did not push for us to replace our still-working furnace and buy a more expensive full system. He even took the time to look at our furnace to give us his opinion on its current condition, and then laid out the pros and cons for us to make an informed decision. Even after he left, he was very responsive to texts and calls when we had additional questions. Once we’d decided, the installation was scheduled quickly, they had availability the very next day (although we chose the day after).
Richard and Kiera came to install the new AC. They were respectful and polite. Brought their booties and kept our home clean. Worked quickly even though it was very hot outside and inside without AC. They took away the old AC system and cleaned up the work area. We’d been wanting to upgrade our thermostat, so we’d purchased a new one on our own and they installed that for free. I’m glad that they did because some troubleshooting was needed with the wires to get it connected, and we would have had a hard time learning and figuring it out for ourselves. Richard even reorganized the cables for our thermostat as they were apparently disorganized and confusing from the previous install. This will help future technicians that come for repairs or maintenance. When we had questions, Richard took the time to answer and explain. Also provided tips on how to properly maintain the system ourselves in between maintenance visits. Overall, we had a great experience with the process from cost estimate to ordering and installation.
While the staff at Polestar Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling were friendly, my experience with their HVAC installation through Costco was highly disappointing. I encountered significant initial overpricing, amateur installation work that led to multiple system failures, and ultimately cut ties over an unreasonable quote for a simple add-on device. In fact, this is the first negative Google review I have ever written for a business.
In June 2025, I hired Polestar Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling in Kansas City via Costco for a new HVAC system. Though the representatives were friendly, their initial quote was exorbitant. I successfully negotiated it down by $3,000, which was concerning; a Costco-affiliated provider should offer a fair price upfront. Consider this a warning: Polestar tends to overprice, so be prepared to negotiate if you use them.
The installation crew was amiable and finished on the same day, but their work was sloppy. The wiring bundles connecting the furnace, humidifier, and thermostats looked amateurish. They tried to tidy it up when asked, but the results were minimal. They also reverse-wired an automatic damper, which they corrected only after I pointed it out.
Post-installation, the zone control for my main and upper levels failed to work correctly. A dispatched technician couldn't fully resolve it, so I requested a more experienced tech. He discovered the initial crew had installed the wrong size automatic damper. Once replaced, the system worked fine until this spring, when the AC stopped cooling. Another Polestar tech discovered a leak near the liquid line filter drier caused by the original crew's improper soldering. While they fixed it, I am disappointed that this sloppy work could lead to premature compressor failure on a year-old system.
Recently, I decided to give Polestar another chance with a straightforward request: installing a soft start device to mitigate compressor surge. The part costs about $300 and takes a certified tech less than an hour to install, yet Polestar quoted me $920 and refused to negotiate. Despite pleasant interactions with their staff throughout the year, their subpar installation work and persistent pattern of excessive pricing mean I am done doing business with them. It takes a lot for me to leave a bad review, and this being my first one speaks volumes about my experience.
Update: I contracted with a reputable, independent contractor to install the part for $650, all in.
I believe Polestar's problem is that in 2024, they took on a Private Equity investor. Private Equity investors are known to buy in to previously solid local businesses then aggressively squeeze additional profits by over pricing and under servicing. Polestar exemplifies that.

Technician came out and couldn’t find anything wrong. When I went down the basement to check on him. He hurried and grabbed the furnace cover and started putting it back on. I asked what he found. The compressor was shorting out. Okay how do we fix that. Nothing. I went back upstairs and let him put the cover on. Then he showed me some pictures of some dust on the blower wheel. He should have used a can of compressed air to clean it off but didn’t. He NEVER CHECKED THE THERMOSTAT OUT !!!!
So he wrote up bids for fixing the problem. The highest price was $10,449.57 then $9015.43 last was $6,663.12
For not finding anything wrong and I used the garden hose to melt the Ice off the coil outside it started working again.
I asked him if he thought it could be just iced over from this terrible heat.
HOW LIKELY AM I TO GET OTHER BIDS AND HAVE A A/C TUNE UP. Very likely.
If this retired Police Officer was being taken advantage of I will blast your COMPANY all over the Media and Social Media and give you a bad review on Google besides this one.

We can’t say enough good things about Zack from Polestar Plumbing. He did an absolutely amazing job for us, replacing our water heater and installing a soft water system and a whole-house sediment filtration system.
From the very beginning to the very end, Zack was incredibly professional, knowledgeable, and patient. He explained everything so clearly and took the time to answer all of our questions. We always knew what he was doing and why, which made the whole process feel easy and stress-free.
Zack went above and beyond, and we truly appreciate the time, effort, and attention to detail he put into everything.
Thank you so much, Zack, for taking such great care of our home. We really appreciate you and the excellent work you did.

I had no hot water. Called Polestar because I saw a truck while I was heading to work one day. The name Polestar came to mind when I needed a plumber. When I called, I never had to wait on hold to leave a message. Made an appointment for the next morning. I got a call 30 min before they came out. Technician Will came out, accessed the situation and showed me what needed to be done. Bummer, a new water heater. Even though I was in a bind with no hot water, I still needed to know my options of a water tank vs a waterless tank. Will answered then gave me quotes of both and explained what needed to be done for both of the options Then let me make my decision. Their was true professionalism. Not too long after he left I made my decision. I did have another company coming by in the afternoon but I called that company and canceled. I already made up my mind. I'm glad I called Polestar.
