Why is my upstairs hotter than downstairs?
It is very common for the upstairs to be warmer than the downstairs, especially during the summer. Heat naturally rises, and the upstairs usually has more exposure to attic heat and sunlight. A well-designed duct system should help compensate for that difference, but many homes are not designed as well as they could be.
Some homes have zoning systems or manual dampers near the furnace that help control where the air goes. The changeover happens automatically. You get the comfort and reduced natural-gas use of the heat pump when conditions are right, along with the strength of gas heat when it is needed.
At Ray's, this is our preferred heat-pump setup for local homes.
Do I need a chimney liner with a new furnace?
Sometimes, but not always. You usually need a chimney liner in two situations.
The first is when you are installing an 80% furnace into an older chimney that is in poor condition or not properly sized. An 80% furnace still vents through a metal flue and chimney, so the chimney needs to be safe, properly sized, and in good condition.
The second common situation is when you are replacing an old 80% furnace with a high-efficiency furnace and leaving only the water heater venting into the chimney. Before the replacement, the furnace and water heater may have both used the chimney. Once the furnace is removed from the chimney, the chimney can become too large for the water heater by itself.
When the chimney is too large, the water heater flue gases may cool down before they leave the chimney. This can cause condensation inside the chimney, which can damage it over time and create venting problems. In that case, a properly sized chimney liner should be installed for the water heater.
At Ray’s, we look at the full venting setup before replacing the furnace. We do not want to solve one problem and create another with the water heater or chimney.
Can I replace an 80% furnace with a 96% furnace?
Yes. Most of the time, an older 80% furnace can be replaced with a new 96% high-efficiency furnace.
The main difference is venting. An 80% furnace usually vents through a metal flue pipe and chimney. A 96% furnace vents through plastic pipe, usually out the side of the house, through the basement wall, or sometimes through the attic or roof, depending on the home.
As long as there is a suitable place to run the new vent pipe, upgrading from an 80% furnace to a 96% furnace is usually very doable.
A 96% furnace also produces condensation, so it needs a drain. Most of the time, it can drain to the same place the air conditioner drains, unless the AC currently drains outside. Common drain options include a sump pump, floor drain, condensate pump, or washer standpipe, depending on the home's layout.
At Ray’s, we look at the venting and drain options before quoting the upgrade. A high-efficiency furnace can be a great option, but it needs to be installed with the right venting, drainage, and setup so it operates safely and correctly.
Should I use a 1-inch or 5-inch furnace filter?
You should use the filter size your system is designed for.
If your furnace has a 1-inch filter rack, use a 1-inch filter. If it has a 5-inch filter cabinet, use a 5-inch filter. The filter needs to fit properly so air cannot bypass it and dust does not get pulled around the filter.
A 1-inch filter is okay, but it needs to be changed more often. Most homeowners should change a 1-inch filter at least every 3 months, and sometimes more often if they have pets, allergies, construction dust, or heavy system use.
A 5-inch filter has much more surface area, so it can usually last much longer—often up to a year, depending on the home. A 5-inch filter can also allow for better filtration without putting as much extra strain on the HVAC blower, as long as the filter and ductwork are sized correctly.
If you currently have a 1-inch filter and want a better setup, you can ask your HVAC company about installing a 5-inch filter cabinet. You do not need to replace the whole furnace just to upgrade the filter setup.
