Your pavers need to be cleaned periodically, several times a year, to keep the integrity and fresh look. There are many good paver cleaning products that you can find in our cleaning supply section. One particular problem that you might experience is call efflorescence, which is white-ist discoloration that can appear to be like a powder or like the soapy scum. Efflorescence is actually Sodium Chloride (table salt) that forms on the surface due to a complex chemical reaction to moisture. Even new pavers can have problems. When new pavers are installed, one of the last finishing steps is to spread joint sand to fill in the gaps, and then compressed. This step can leave a fine layer of dust on your pavers that can potentially cause efflorescence if not cleaned properly. A light pressure cleaning is the correct way to wash this dust from surface and remove excess sand above the pavers, but unfortunately many installers just hose off or blow off the dust, which still leaves a dirty surface. The bottom line, after years of experience, proper maintenance is always the best practice to avoid problem and retain that new and beautiful look.
