We hired this company for a project on Marco Island and from day one requested a Certificate of Insurance (COI), which is standard operating procedure in construction, especially to verify workers compensation coverage and avoid potential liability and fines.
Throughout the project they were very easy to work with, showed up when they said they would, and completed the work as promised, so I will give credit where it’s due.
However, once the job was completed and they requested payment, we again asked for the previously requested COI before releasing the check. We were told their scanners were not working and that we could simply pick it up when delivering payment. When we arrived, we were only provided with general liability insurance and were told workers compensation was “not part of a COI in Florida,” which is incorrect when verifying subcontractor compliance.
After explaining that we needed the documentation to protect our company and comply with standard requirements, the situation became unprofessional and we were cursed at in Portuguese while attempts were made to obtain proper workers compensation documentation.
It’s unfortunate because the project itself went smoothly, but professionalism and proper insurance documentation are extremely important in this industry.
