In our opinion, this company was a leader in the local industry for many years. We have used them solely for maintenance and installation for nearly 20 years. Recently when we had an equipment failure (blower motor), we called Berkeley and received a same day appointment. The technician arrived on time. The diagnosis was an expensive part needed replacement and on an aging system, the technician replaced full unit replacement. The cost was >30% of a 10 yo system, understandable recommendation. The unit was a heat pump packaged unit, meaning the compressor and blower are in a single unit outside of the home - and not a split system with the blower inside. We paid a diagnostic fee, normal price per industry standards.
When the sales team called, we were pleasantly surprised that the owner (Gordon Dinger) was our point of contact. This is unfortunately where things went wrong and we started to see many red flags. We were provided with a quote to replace the system, the quote was a singular option without any tiers to allow decisions to be made in regarding price, recommended middle ground, or efficiency. We have always received options and been provided with expert guidance on how to choose what was the right fit for the customer. We asked for some options, because we were quoted for a unit that had a lower efficiency rating than the old unit and was a different brand. Gordon offered one additional unit that was a single stage (one speed) and we were replacing a variable speed system. So we were unable to compare the equipment. Gordon began pushing us to order immediately because of low stock locally. Lastly, when asked about switching from an electric AUX heat to natural gas (as we recently had our home plumbed for natural gas and had pipe and fixtures nearby the HVAC unit. He said that package units of that type do not exist, and reiterated that time was running out to get last remaining HVAC system in the region (the model he offered). The pushy, palatably inflated sense of urgency, lack of product knowledge, and single selection quote were our indicators to cease the conversation. We never completed the sales process.
We asked for a second opinion from another company, and were provided with the service and attention that we expected, but did not receive from Berkeley.
Essentially, we were left with the impression that while Gordon has a successful business, that something has changed and the warm welcoming company that we trusted for many years is no longer that. This may be a unique experience, but we chose to trust our intuition and to go with another company.
