My problem is that I don't think they were very up front on their pricing. They told me on the phone that there was a $79 fee for them to come out, and that the plumber would discuss with me the costs from there. The guy did diagnose the problem by taking 6 screws off of our septic tank access lid and determining that the tank was full. He charged $199 for a "diagnostic fee" for that service, and it was not discussed beforehand. Total cost was $278. I feel dumb for not removing the septic tank access cover myself and checking that, but I also feel kind of taken advantage of by this diagnostic fee and the fact that they didn't mention it up front. I can only imagine what the cost would be if they had actually done plumbing work.

Fair enough, but when the plumber arrives he begins doing work that you didn't want or ask for, and then charges you whatever he feels like.
