Frequently Asked Questions About Atlantic Insulation, Inc.
What type of insulation do I need?
This is based on budget and application.
We base insulation on three levels: at the bottom at number three would be fiberglass batts / #2 would be the hybrid types such as Rockwool and Therma fiber / then the #1 would be Closed Cell foam. Referred to as rigid foam.
If we choose Closed Cell foam what are some of the benefits over the other two?
Closed Cell is the only product that can provide air sealing.
Being a two-component liquid application it can get to every nook and cranny of the area.
At 1 of thickness it can increase the structural integrity of a structure by 300%.
It is the only product approved by FEMA.
These are only a few of the superior qualities of this product.
Are there any other types of foam?
There are two types. Open Cell and Closed Cell. For our region we are strictly Closed Cell. Open Cell does not provide any type of vapor barrier and will absorb moisture. Although we have people in our industry that will offer it in these types of conditions they are completely wrong and should never recommend this product in a coastal environment.
What should we look for in a contractor?
Regarding spray foam:
How long have they been performing this service?
Where and how did they obtain their training?
Are they certified? Insured properly?
I was told my house has to breathe.
This is absolutely true. This is why our slogan is
Build Tight / Vent Right
Our company can walk you through the proper steps to be certain you are within the necessary parameters to assure top efficiency.
What is an ERV?
An energy recovery ventilator.
Exchanges stale indoor air for filtered fresh outdoor air.
A go to product when considering spray foaming your home's entire envelope.
My HVAC contractor has proposed installing our new system in our attic. Is this recommended?
It is not recommended but you might have no choice due to room restrictions.
Your HVAC contractor should be advising you that this is not the optimum location and that you might want to consider converting to a conditioned attic to achieve optimum efficiency from the new system
Our company can provide a custom solution for your needs.
I've read about off gassing issues.
Once cured there is no off gassing. However, if improperly applied this product can have off gassing issues due to off ratio foam.
This is why it is important to be sure that the contractor knows what they are doing and has been properly trained.
We have 18 years plus and are trained and certified.
Can I do it myself?
Although you can purchase what is referred to as mini sets at various brick and mortar stores as well as online, we do not recommend this. This is not a DIY type of project. As we mentioned, you should be properly trained and have knowledge of any chemicals you may encounter.
Formaldehyde?
There is no formaldehyde in spray foam today.
Do I need a vapor barrier?
Possibly, but it is on a case-by-case scenario. Not all crawlspaces need a vapor barrier. Our staff can inspect your crawlspace and provide you with the best plan. Caution: vapor barriers have become an easy sale for various contractors such as pest control companies, handyman services, etc. A good amount of what we see are homes that did not warrant a vapor barrier.
Are you fully licensed & insured?
Yes!
What types of insulation does Atlantic Insulation, Inc. offer?
Atlantic Insulation offers Closed & Open Cell Spray Foam, Rigid Foam Board, Rockwool Safe n Sound, and Knauf Ultra Pure among other products for insulation needs.
What are the benefits of choosing Closed Cell foam insulation?
Closed Cell foam provides superior air sealing, increases structural integrity by 300% at 1-inch thickness, and is approved by FEMA. It can fill every nook and cranny due to its two-component liquid application.
Is Open Cell spray foam recommended for coastal environments like Cape May?
No, Open Cell does not provide a vapor barrier and absorbs moisture, making it unsuitable for coastal environments. Atlantic Insulation strictly uses Closed Cell foam for the region.
What should I consider when choosing a spray foam insulation contractor?
Look for contractors with extensive experience, proper training, certification, and current insurance to ensure quality and safety in application.
