Building a custom home means you can create a living space that’s all your own. Prairie Home Builders will help you design a house in Lincoln, NE, that’s completely unique and perfectly suited to your lifestyle. When you partner with this company for home construction, you’ll have the freedom to choose between dozens of options to make your new house feel just like home. This family-owned business was founded by two brothers in 1989 and has since become the leading home builder in the Lincoln market. Their team, which includes reliable and experienced subcontractors and designers, has built over 1,300 homes in their three decades of operation.
We started the process of building a home back in October, and we moved in May 16th. We have now lived in our home more than a month and completed our 45-day warranty walkthrough for any concerns or necessary touch-ups.
The overall experience with Prairie was great! I want to make clear we would definitely recommend them for anybody wanting to build a home regardless of a few minor hiccups along the way. We learned the home-building process is never perfect, but Prairie was as close as we could ever want!
Pros:
-- Great communication from Aaron, Jaysa (Magnolia Real Estate employee), and Rob Champoux
-- Down-to-earth staff who care about you as a person and aren't trying to make an extra buck at every turn
-- We leaned heavily on Jaysa for most of our process, but Rob/Aaron were always doing great work for us when we needed more information
-- Jaysa is a damn rock star...request her for your real estate agent through Magnolia
-- Several informational meetings that included budget lists, floor plans, ideas/questions, etc.
-- Willing to work with us on a few semi-customizable ideas to a floor plan we loved
-- Cool phone app that walks you through timing of different parts of your home being built
-- Very understanding of the budget we wanted to maintain but also great at making suggestions for items you want now in your new home that you wouldn't be able to add later
-- The buyers of our contingency sale home had to wait an extra week to move in, and Prairie was great about letting us move our items into the garage and store them for a week...Saved us a lot of money, thank you!
-- The home warranty guy, Charlie, is great at his job...very kind and takes good care of his customers to make sure that even the smallest concern isn't a problem at all...He wants his customers happy and will put in the work to get you the best he can
Cons:
-- We didn't feel prepared for one of our first meetings late in the fall because we didn't understand all the detailed decisions that would need to be made in order to get close to solidifying a budget...for example, we didn't know where we wanted all our outlets....However, Prairie was understanding and helped answer all our questions as we kept moving forward.
-- We are STILL waiting on a mailbox...This has been a glaring problem from the housing development guy Steve Champoux...We continue to hear he's going to get us a mailbox, but he won't ever just get it done even when several other employees have reached out to him. He also won't give out his personal cell phone to customers, so all we continue to hear is "Steve will get it done," but it's been more than a month now. Hey Steve, we need a mailbox!
-- Slight delays in timing for sod and foundation grading...Some of this was due to weather, but as we got to closing date, it didn't happen until the day of...
-- The labor crew working on foundation, dirt, and grading said they soaked the dirt down so that it wouldn't sink. However, they forgot to soak down the dirt in a large area against our house in the backyard. Thankfully, the warranty guy Charlie was all over it and took great care of us.
-- We wish there was a more step-by-step process when it comes to deciding many things for the exterior of the home. Prairie just gives you a bag of magazines, colors, and a pamphlet of lined items to fill out by a certain date. If we had somebody walk us through this in a bit more detail, it could've made an overwhelming process a bit easier. Jaysa was there whenever we had questions.
