I'm just a regular guy. Mechanical engineer by day and my wife and I have a handful of rental properties that I deal with in my spare time. When we buy a new rental property, there are 3 things that I do, replace all plumbing, Install a new water heater and install a new HVAC system. Most of the houses we buy are foreclosures so the HVAC system is typically missing anyway.. Needless to say all 7 of our houses currently run 1 if not 2 Trane systems partially because the gentleman I typically call for HVAC systems puts these in. All of our systems vary in age from 2 years old to 11 years old. I had a blower motor go out in one of our units and since the house was vacant and I had some spare time I figured that I would replace it myself this time. I called Trane in Hickory for the blower motor and was given a price in the 350 dollar range. CC Dickson has the motor for 150 dollars. So I called the Trane store back and asked why such a difference... because I'm not a licensed HVAC installer was their response. I get marking it up a little because I'm not an installer but double the price plus.. So I ordered the blower motor from CC Dickson. When I received it, it did not have the two rubber motor mounts that allow the motor to fit into the cradle. I called CC Dickson back and they said they could have it the next day and the cost was $2 each (2 required $4 total). Wanting to see if the Trane store might have them in stock, I called them and they said yes they did and the price would be $12 each $24 total. After hearing this and remembering the blower motor cost difference as well, I told the gentlemen that if this is the way Trane does business with their end users, that the unit I purchased 3 years ago might be the last one I purchase. I wasn't rude or abrupt, simply taken back at the mark up. The gentleman on the phone who identified himself as John said they no longer had the item I was looking for in stock and hung up the phone. This will be my last Trane Unit. I will phase them out to a Goodman or a Rheem or someone else after I do some research. Thank you John at Trane in Hickory Nc, Typically I just pay a service gentleman to fix these problems and have no clue about your company or how you deal with the end user, so thank you very much for making me aware.
