Carpeting.
We have used Abbott many times for paint. They also connected us to our all-time favorite painter who was just starting out in business.
This was our first time with carpeting. The selection was broad. They carried on extensive discussion with the carpet factory for a special installation issue. The price was reasonable.
Unlike two chains that we contacted, they stayed with us and kept us informed and advocated for a better (and cheaper) way to do an unusual edge binding. One company even told us to start over with another affiliate because after the negotiation was done, they realized that we were outside their service area.
On installation day, a subcontractor arrived. Like the painter, the two people were skilled, efficient, and took pride in their work. They cleaned up perfectly.

Went into store. It was empty of staff. I could hear someone in the back. I called out, no one responded. Waited around a few minutes, without seeing anyone, so I left and gave my money to Sherwin Williams instead.

2 rude customer service experiences within 2 phone calls & 2 reps. 1) I called to ask about one specific paint color being in stock. Unidentified male rep interrupted me, told me I'd be transferred, after a long hold the process started over. I was interrupted in the 1st few words to be transferred again, then asked if there were better time to call back (maybe after lunch breaks or something). I surrender my name & phone number but knew I couldn't wait by the phone so I asked if the rep could please just "let me know if they have white pearl in stock in a message when they call back". He absolutely refused, kept interrupting me, told me to talk with them despite, what I thought was, a rather reasonable request. 2) The female rep who called back had zero interest in rebuilding the impression, curtly reported they had the color in 6oz only. I thanked her for confirming the size that was available then mentioned that I would want to know about my earlier experience if I were the owner the company, (I did not say this to her but it is especially true since it has been a long time family owned company and this directly reflects upon them, as I know has been the case with my parents who ran their owns businesses and were held accountable socially, and financially, for the attitudes/mistakes of their staff). She hung up the phone on my mid sentence with no word on it. Ok. ...Perhaps these staff members are "nice" to people in the store but dismissing an opportunity to do well in such a basic way indicates that either more training and accountability protocols need to be put in place or these folks should not be dealing directly with customers in their respective roles. -- If they are simply too busy to deal with new business, then Mike Abbot won't mind loosing mine after this. ...I guess this is why people lean so much on Amazon despite their known terrible practices, because who wants the rigamarole of a locally owned business that doesn't appreciate basics customer service? I'm not sure what value they think they offer over the convenience of buying online where I don't get put on hold and hung up on when I provide feedback they don't want to deal with.
