Frequently Asked Questions About Glass Doctor of Northeast Michigan
Can you replace just one pane on a window?
No. Each double or triple pane window is manufactured in a quality-controlled environment and sealed carefully to keep air or gas trapped between the panes. As more and more windows include a heat reflective low-emissivity (Low-E) surface inside the unit, these become irreparable once moisture oxidizes the material, leaving a discolored, moldy appearance inside the unit. Even without a Low-E surface, the water staining that occurs from condensing and evaporating over and over leaves a hazy film on the glass that cannot ever be cleaned to perfection.
How do I know if my glass is a tempered safety glass?
If you use steam to fog the glass, you will see a tempered logo in one of the corners that shows the glass is safety glass. There are code requirements for safety glass as well. Consult with your local Glass Doctor for those requirements.
We are remodeling our bathroom and would like our existing mirror cut down to a smaller size. Can you do that?
Most likely. However, if the mirror is glued to the wall, there is no guarantee that it can be taken down without breaking. If you can get the existing mirror off the wall, we will need the mirror brought to our shop to cut down. There is no guarantee that the mirror will cut without breaking either. We cannot be responsible if a piece of glass or mirror that belongs to a customer breaks when trying to cut it, but we always do our best to cut carefully.
What is your Windshield Protection Plan?
For auto glass, we have the best guarantee in the nation upon installing a new windshield. If you choose our Windshield Protection Plan, you’ll have coverage for a full 12 months. Should you get a rock chip in your new windshield, Glass Doctor will repair it at no cost to you. Our Windshield Protection Plan covers all rock chips received in the first 12 months — no limit. Should you receive damage that is not repairable such as a long crack or significant damage in the driver’s view area, we will replace the windshield at no cost to you for the glass material. Depending upon the type of coverage you purchase at the time of original install, you may be responsible for the cost of labor, adhesive, and moldings.
How long after my windshield gets replaced can I drive away?
Currently, most Glass Doctor locations use urethane with a one-hour safe drive-away time from when the new windshield gets set. No need for blue tape or any holds on washing your car. You are fully protected at the 60-minute mark. Please be sure to check with your local Glass Doctor to ensure the type of urethane being used.
Can you replace just one pane on a double or triple pane window?
No, individual panes on double or triple pane windows cannot be replaced due to their sealed and controlled manufacturing process.
How can I identify if my glass is tempered safety glass?
Using steam to fog the glass will reveal a tempered logo in one corner, indicating it is safety glass. Local code requirements may also apply.
Can you cut down an existing bathroom mirror to a smaller size?
Possibly, if the mirror can be removed undamaged. You need to bring it to the shop, but there is no guarantee it won't break during cutting.
What does the Windshield Protection Plan cover?
It covers unlimited chip repairs and glass cost for windshield replacement within 12 months of original installation at no charge for materials.
How soon can I drive after my windshield replacement?
Most locations use urethane allowing safe driving 60 minutes after windshield installation, without restrictions on washing or tape.
