Brett Pfaff has been a fantastic partner throughout my insulation process. Highly responsive and professional, he’s got great attention to detail and provides through context for his recommendations. The crew who came to do the insulation work were fast and efficient.
We had SM mechanical do an energy audit after seeing TikTok’s about the program posted by Brad the HVAC manager. We had no clue about the BGE/Pepco/Del Marva subsidy program and were a bit skeptical but our HVAC system was 25 years old and giving us annoying issues the past couple of summers so we figured we might as well try. First, Roy came to do the audit for the insulation and then Brad took measurements for the HVAC system. Within a few days we got the quote for the job and what rebates we would receive which cut the job cost almost in half! We were getting a new dual fuel HVAC system and insulation for a cheaper price combined after the rebates than if we replaced the unit with a similar HVAC system. An obvious no brainer!
The communication with everyone from SM mechanical was also amazing and answered all of my questions. The techs that came to install the HVAC and insulation were super kind and knowledgeable. I would 1000% recommend SM mechanical to anyone needing work done and to get the energy audit to take advantage of the rebates if you are able because it’s so worth it!

I wanted to provide an update to my original review. After hearing back from the owner, I am adjusting my rating from 1 star to 3 stars.
I do want to acknowledge that communication is a two-way street, and I could have followed up as well. My original post was not intended to be negative or to slander the company—it was simply an honest reflection of my experience at that time.
I have since heard back from Brad, although there were a couple of inconsistencies in the messages received. That said, I understand that things can happen, and I appreciate the follow-up.

I wanted to share my experience regarding the quote process. Brad was very helpful during the visit and took the time to thoroughly explain the program, which I appreciated. However, it has now been over a week and I have not yet received the quote.
They were the second company I had come out, and at this point are the only one I am still waiting to hear back from. Timely follow-up is an important part of the customer experience, especially when potential customers are actively making decisions.
I cannot speak to the quality of their work since I did not make it to that stage, but I would encourage improved communication and follow-up with prospective customers.
When I recently purchased my new home I knew the HVAC system and water heater needed to be replaced, the HVAC was from 1989 and the water heater 2008. After doing some research and reaching out to a few companies I came across SM Mechanical. I inquired online and within 10 minutes I was on a call with Brad. He asked me some basic questions, what service was I looking for, what were my wants/needs with a new system, the basics. After our discussion he mentioned that they worked with BGE and were a registered contractor with their EmPower program. My house fit the criteria of the program and Brad shared he thought we’d be able to get the max rebate available.
The EmPower program seemed fake or too good to be true, but it’s legit. It’s worth looking into if you need new equipment. After our discussion Roy reached out and came to my house to perform an energy audit. Through that energy audit he was able to identify deficiencies and produce a report to indicate how much of a rebate I’d receive.
I was able to get a brand new heat pump/air handler system, a heat pump hybrid electric 50gal water heater, fresh air intake, spray foam around my entire house in the rim joists, air sealed my attic, and R49 insulation all for the cost of what other companies were just quoting for a heat pump replacement.
From the first call with Brad and Roy, all the way through to the insulation crew leaving, it has been a breeze. Communication has been fantastic. Everyone has been on time. The house was left just as clean as it was when they arrived. All their employees have been respectful, hard working, and skilled at their trades. I would 100% recommend and re-use SM Mechanical for any of my mechanical needs. They truly went above and beyond to make sure we got everything we needed.
(As a side note. They also have a sister company called Trinity Exteriors that do exterior work on homes amongst other things)
