Two Brothers, Nicholas and James Montalbano, along with three cousins, Theodore, Gregory Sr., and John Montalbano were looking to supplement their income and decided to open a small paint supply store. They shared in the duties of working in the store while holding down full time jobs. They got the stores name by using the first three letters of their last name Mon and combining it with Nick the primary founder of the company.
