I live in a 1960 ranch that had a 30-ish-year-old 80% natural gas furnace and a similar age central a/c. Both were old enough to die any time. Rather than wait for an emergency, I wanted to take advantage of the clean energy tax credits and incentives to try to get a new system, but also to have an air source heat pump as the centerpiece. Because heat pumps are less common here than gas furnaces with a/c, I sought out bids from three reputable local firms that I knew do heat pumps. Rose had done EXACTLY the same type of installation for a client of mine whose priorities were similar.
One of the competing vendors was also a Bryant dealer with access to the exact same product lineup. Both other firms provided me with a multitude of options. While I'm generally happy to have more information, rather than less, Rose sent exactly one bid for one combination of hardware. And it was perfect.
I had nerded out on my research ahead of all of this. I am a real estate broker, so I deal with home inspections and HVAC issues all the time. So I did not need to be sold or explained to.
When I say the single bid scenario was perfect, I mean that it was a perfect reflection of every single priority I had mentioned: wanting the centerpiece to be a heat pump that would improve cooling efficiency and handle as much of the winter heating as possible; balancing cost and logistics in selecting the right backup heat source; and adding three new returns in each of my bedrooms for improved performance with bedroom doors closed.
The perfect equipment combination was also bid at the best price by a considerable margin. Finally, this well-priced equipment package was the top-tier product series, which I would have expected to be priced way beyond what was sensible to spend on a relatively small home. While many installers seem to use the top-tier product as an opportunity to pad profits and really jack the price, Rose seemed to want to put the best product into my home at the best price.
As it turns out, there are very real benefits to the high-end products. The Evolution Series heat pump functions down to -11 degrees. Lower end models (and pretty much all heat pumps more than a couple of years old) see their useful operating range bottom out around 30-35 degrees. My hope is to generate all of my home's heat from the heat pump down to single digits, thereby limiting my gas-fired heating to two or three weeks of the coldest days of the year.
The Evolution series also has variable speed operation. I was shocked at how quiet the system operation is. Under most conditions, it's running in near silence at less than full blast, and it NEVER kicks on with a jolt. Even under heavy heating or cooling load conditions, it quietly ramps up to full speed. Besides quiet operation, the real-world benefit is that the system can ensure that it runs longer, nearly silent cooling cycles on non-heat-advisory days to achieve optimal dehumidification. That, in turn, generally makes humans more comfortable at a slightly higher temperature. So it should lead to improved comfort, drastically quieter operation, and less energy use. In a time of out-of-control electricity price hikes, this system can be expected to cut my cooling costs by more than 50%.
Everything with Rose operated on time from the initial site visit to the installation to the after-installation customer orientation. Everyone I've dealt with has been friendly and knowledgeable. When the service manager, who has been with the firm for many years, told me he's about to move an hour away, but he is keeping his job and plans to retire from Rose many years from now, it says something about the quality of the company leadership and the company culture.
My Rose experience has been absolutely perfect so far.
