This thorough review is not meant to insult anyone, but to inform the public so they can make a more informed decision when dealing with stressful repairs.
We had our gas shut off by Nicor because a leak had been detected. The Nicor guy found 3 total leaks at the joints between pipes, all closely located, and not requiring much gas line disassembly given their locations being on the same branches. The Nicor technician explained that the repair shouldn’t cost much at all, should be quick, and to call them again when the repair is done in order for them to check the repair and turn the gas back on if the repair was done right.
We had Tyler from Arnold and Sons come out to give us a quote for the work, as they were recommended to me.
Here is the quote that was received.
$1,790 to repair the old gas lines
$2,260 to put in new gas lines
$5,099 to put in new gas lines AND a new water heater
Mind you, all that needed to happen was resealing the joints (had a qualified family member do it for us in the end for FREE- took them about an hour and I now know how to easily do it myself).
Not once throughout the entire visit did Tyler mention just twisting the pipes off, adding new pipe tape and sealant, and then twisting them back on. Not ONCE. That is something that should’ve been done by them quickly without any issue. I know this, because I witnessed the actually repair being done by my family member, and we now have gas again. We didn’t need anything else, just the pipes to be resealed. Even just twisting them off to check if they were corroded would’ve been helpful, but Tyler never twisted a single pipe to check anything.
In fairness, we did ask their opinion about a drain issue we’d been having, but we didn’t intend on addressing that issue that day. We just wanted our gas back on.
Of course, they also pushed a new water heater on us to purchase. Ours is from 2015 and haven’t had any issues with it (knock on wood for us), but Tyler said it may break during or after the pipe repair process, so we might as well get a new one given it’s age too.
Tyler told us that the pipes, that were leaking at the joints and just needed to be resealed, looked to be in bad shape and should be replaced soon. But, he also said that the rest of the home’s gas pipes looked fine. All of the gas lines are similar in age and look the same, so that was confusing to hear as well. When the repair was done by my family member, we were happy to see how clean and non-corroded the threads and pipes were overall. So, Tyler was mistaken on the health of the pipes.
We did the repair as a family, had Nicor check the work, which was done “perfectly” according to them, and we have gas again same day. Arnold and Sons was going to have us wait until Wednesday (the original call was a Monday) for them to do 5+ hours of work total in two separate visits throughout the day.
They also said we should have a new sewer pipe clean out installed for nearly $1,500 additional. To us, every one of those prices was way too high and was not supported by the facts of the work that was needed and average industry costs for the task and labor.
In order to pay for this over time, they even had us apply for a loan credit of up to $10,000 to cover everything, and then we’d be paying 12.99% interest on the project for years. It all happened so quickly and it was a stressful position to be put in when we are in need of gas to power much of our home (excited to move to electric when we have the funds).
We literally saved thousands yesterday by NOT choosing to have them fix our issue, we got our gas turned back on on Monday and didn’t have to wait until Wednesday, and we got to visit with family during the repair.
It was a no brainer for us to NOT choose Arnold and Sons, and this experience will ensure we choose other professionals in the future too.
