  In 2025, I worked with and completed three kitchen renovations with Fred Alsen. Each client and project were very different and Fred pivoted seamlessly in helping to bring our visions to life under strict timelines. His expertise and attention to detail in kitchen design is the best! And Builders is great because everything is done locally and they make customizing extremely easy.   As an architect, I have worked with a number of cabinet fabricators in the Chicago area, but I've been most impressed with Builders Cabinet for their reliability, consistent quality and superior service. Mike's extensive experience has influenced every design I've brought to the table and my clients have really enjoyed their showroom visits. Behind the scenes, Danny's high energy and attention to detail keeps fabrication on track, which is critical for a project's success. Overall, I would highly recommend this shop for all of your cabinetry needs.

  My husband and I worked with Fred Alsen on the remodel of our dated, 1996 condo kitchen. Our realtor recommended that we visit Builders Cabinet once we decided to remodel. We went to "just take a look" and left with a complete design idea after describing our vision and working with Fred. Fred is a gifted designer, and we were drawn immediately to one of his stylish installations in the showroom. In a few days, Eric came to measure, and not even a week later, we had measured plans, drawings and elevations from Fred! Everyone we met and worked with is talented, professional, and experienced. We used Builders to install the cabinets and worked on a separate contract with the same contractor, Ivan, to do all the work. Fred also referred us to his contacts for appliances and countertops. A wonderful experience. We are truly pleased with the outcome (a little painting left to do). We highly recommend.

  Made an appointment in advance for a consultation with Fred, and left within 15 minutes. We came to Builders Cabinets to explore custom cabinet options for an upcoming kitchen renovation. Fred was incredibly rude - constantly interrupting myself and my spouse, mentioning their high price points (almost as a deterrent to make us leave?), and more. We are not ones to read too much into bad interactions, but it was painfully obvious that Fred thought we were a waste of his time "as the company's top designer." When asked what the goal of these consultations were, Fred was unable to answer. I feel that civility and mutual respect, especially with a first interaction, is a minimum, especially when meeting a potential client. I think we were not welcomed here from the moment we stepped foot inside, and do not recommend for others that are looking for custom cabinetry.

  DO NOT buy there white shaker cabinets. As a designer, I believe it is important to live we products you recommend to your clients. I purchased Builder's white shaker cabinets in 2014. They started yellowing after five years. Builder's is aware that their material yellows, but we were not made aware of this fact at purchase. The kicker is that unlike other manufacturers, they do not warranty the products. Their only recourse is to repurchase new fronts and pay to have someone reinstall them.
