Frequently Asked Questions About Glass Doctor of Eagle & Boise
Can you replace just one pane on a window?
No. Each double or triple pane window is manufactured in a quality-controlled environment and sealed carefully to keep air or gas trapped between the panes. As more and more windows include a heat reflective low-emissivity (Low-E) surface inside the unit, these become irreparable once moisture oxidizes the material, leaving a discolored, moldy appearance inside the unit. Even without a Low-E surface, the water staining that occurs from condensing and evaporating over and over leaves a hazy film on the glass that cannot ever be cleaned to perfection.
How do I know if my glass is a tempered safety glass?
If you use steam to fog the glass, you will see a tempered logo in one of the corners that shows the glass is safety glass. There are code requirements for safety glass as well. Consult with your local Glass Doctor for those requirements.
We are remodeling our bathroom and would like our existing mirror cut down to a smaller size. Can you do that?
Most likely. However, if the mirror is glued to the wall, there is no guarantee that it can be taken down without breaking. If you can get the existing mirror off the wall, we will need the mirror brought to our shop to cut down. There is no guarantee that the mirror will cut without breaking either. We cannot be responsible if a piece of glass or mirror that belongs to a customer breaks when trying to cut it, but we always do our best to cut carefully.
Only the bottom section of my window is broken. Do you have to change the entire sash, or can you just change the glass in my frame?
We specialize in glass replacement. We can, in most cases, remove the glass from the frame and install new glass. Your existing window sash will remain.
Can you buff scratches out of glass?
Scratch removal in residential glass and light commercial applications is not a commercially viable solution. Basically, it is labor-intensive and not very successful. Furthermore, if the customer is not satisfied with the result, they are understandably not willing to pay for the time and materials invested by the glass company. Scratch removal and scratch buffing systems exist; however, they are typically only practical in warehouses, industrial, and on larger commercial glass projects. Please call our Glass Doctor office if you would like a more detailed explanation.
Can Glass Doctor of Eagle & Boise replace a single pane on a double or triple pane window?
No, they cannot replace just one pane. Double or triple pane windows are sealed in a controlled environment, making individual pane replacement impossible without compromising quality.
How can I tell if my glass is tempered safety glass?
You can fog the glass with steam to see the tempered logo in a corner, indicating safety glass. Additionally, local code requirements for safety glass apply; consult with Glass Doctor for details.
Is it possible to resize an existing mirror during bathroom remodeling?
Typically yes, if the mirror can be removed without breaking. However, cutting carries risks and cannot be guaranteed not to break; Glass Doctor requires the mirror be brought to their shop for cutting.
If only the bottom section of my window is broken, can Glass Doctor replace just the glass?
Yes, Glass Doctor specializes in glass replacement and can usually remove and replace just the glass without changing the entire window sash.
Can scratches on residential glass be buffed out by Glass Doctor?
Scratch removal for residential glass is generally not practical or successful. It is labor-intensive and often unsatisfactory for customers. Scratch buffing is mainly effective for industrial or large commercial glass.
