This is my first and only negative review of any company on the island, and it's worth sharing to save you the headache.
I've been a loyal customer with Island Comfort - O'ahu for six years now, but something has got to give. I initially purchased and had installed by them four whole-home split a/c units and added a fifth just last year. I always keep up with the six month maintenance and even purchased their pre-paid maintenance plan earlier this year. All was going well, until three of the original four units started to either corrode (not just rust), leak, or give out altogether. The parts warranty is good for twelve years, and the labor warranty expires after six. Timely because that's when the units began having problems.
Recently, my main unit stopped cooling and when the technician came out he said that it was leaking freon and wanted to charge me over $1k to follow the leak. Funny for that, because I got a second opinion from an a/c repair guy friend who told me that it was the compressor just by eyeballing it. When I called Island Comfort to have another technician come back out to confirm this, the problem was confirmed to be the compressor and, being under warranty, it would be replaced. I refused to pay another diagnostic fee for that screw up and so they ate that expense.
When I inquired on the status of that warranty piece, with four calls on 10/15, 10/23, 10/28, and 11/04 and no response to any of my verbal messages left with the phone girl, I was finally told on 11/10 when I called yet again that the part is now obsolete and that they would have to replace the entire unit for a brand new one "free of charge." There are a couple of catches, however ... The *brand new* unit will come with six years taken off the twelve year parts warranty because the faulty, old unit "ate up six years already"... how does that make sense? The warranty is on a specific unit and parts, and has nothing to do with the old one. And I'd also have to pay $150/hour for ~2 hours for the labor to install the new unit that is replacing their faulty unit... how does that, too, make any sense?
And for the other two units running into similar issues, one continues to leak for which I have to continue to pay diagnostic and labor fees every time they come out - and after they supposedly fixed it months prior on 02/11/25. They even tried to fault me by stating that I have to keep up with the maintenance, to which I reminded them that I'm on a pre-paid maintenance package with them that has the technicians coming out every six months, and they last came out two months prior to this new leak on 09/11/25. The other unit is corroded (not just rusted, for which I know warranty doesn't cover). It seems to me that their cleaning and maintenance work is lackluster at best.
To these points, I say run from this company and its promises of excellent service, support, and 100% customer satisfaction (according to their website). When I ask to speak with the owner to express my sincerest concerns with HIS company, the two ladies that now communicate with me are quick to hesitate. I expect a resolution from the owner to keep his promise of 100% customer satisfaction. The BBB has been notified of this matter.
