I was warned off Magnet by a couple of people, but the staff at the Crawley branch seemed experienced, helpful and reassuring, so we went ahead.
That changed the moment we paid our deposit…
Our builders were starting work on 14 September so it was essential for us that we had our kitchen delivered. Magnet knew this and repeatedly told us (in writing) that our kitchen would be delivered on 18 September.
We paid a £1,950 deposit through a slightly unsettling web payment portal and never received a receipt.
Our design was finalised on 2 September. On 3 September we were told the order was being completed and assured it had been placed and everything was on track for 18 September.
By 9 and 10 September I was still chasing the final price, finance details and delivery confirmation.
Then on 14 September, the day our builders started work, Magnet called me to set up the order and discovered that the system delivery date was now showing a delivery date of 30 October.
That was around six weeks later than the date we had been repeatedly told. I called the branch to get an explanation and was told this is normal because they would order to the trade counter and then swap the stock, they do this all the time. I asked for assurance in writing that the kitchen would be here for 18 September and was told “I can’t do that for you and I understand if you want to cancel”.
There was more talk trying to source stock elsewhere to rescue the order, but by that point we had lost confidence and cancelled. On requesting cancellation I was then told that the appliances would have taken at least another 5 weeks anyway.
Now being left without a kitchen. I was at least relieved that I was done with Magnet as I probably prevented further issues that would have occurred. But I couldn’t have been more wrong… The refund was even worse.
After cancellation, the head office customer care team was effectively non-existent. We received no proper confirmation of when our £1,950 deposit would be returned, and Magnet never resolved it with us.
I eventually raised a transaction dispute with Barclaycard, and Barclaycard settled it.
I am extremely glad I paid by credit card, because I honestly don’t know how long this could have dragged on for.
A kitchen renovation is a huge commitment and a once in a lifetime event for many. People book builders, rip rooms apart and make other purchases based on the dates they are given. Customers should not then have to fight to recover their own deposit when those dates fall apart.
For anyone considering Magnet, my advice is simple: don’t. However if you want to take the risk then make sure to get the final price, order confirmation and delivery date in writing before committing to anything and pay by credit card.
We ignored the warnings because the service before deposit was so good and we genuinely loved the design. I wish we hadn’t.

Had a design appointment, never received the design or any further contact from Magnet after several weeks. Only when chased told by store manager Chris that designer had left and someone else would contact us. After chasing again (nobody called..) they tried once and left a voicemail. You can’t call the store back as goes to a central number that nobody answers.
