The customer is always right? Well, apparently you're not the customer if you're buying a Howdens kitchen (the trade you're using is)!
I provided Howdens with diagrams showing exactly what I wanted. However, when part of the worktop was manufactured incorrectly, I discovered something remarkable: Howdens hadn't actually recorded this requirement as part of the specification - I was informed they actively don't.
Instead, they told me afterwards that these decisions are made during templating and can be signed off by the kitchen fitter if the homeowner is not present. I was not warned of this in advance so didn't know I needed to preempt this by speaking to the fitter, and/or ensuring I was present during the templating.
Think about that for a moment.
Howdens acknowledge that homeowners may not attend templating, yet they do not ensure they capture and meet requirements already provided by the ones paying for the kitchen. Those that will be using it. As a result, a fitter can unknowingly approve something different from what the customer requested, because the customer's requirements were never formally carried through. Obviously we should have been consulted by the fitter, but we weren't and it's Howdens process that enables that risk.
Even more bizarrely, after the mistake occurred, I was told that the fitted should have been a phone call "if there was any uncertainty".
But there was no uncertainty in the information I had provided. The uncertainty only arose because Howdens chose not to record or use it. They couldn't ensure we were informed when there was a discrepancy from what we provided because it had been ignored. Howdens did not sent me what had been signed off so I could not intervene - again a limitation that they just 'deal with the trade'.
Some mistakes are entirely avoidable. What concerns me is a process that allows customer requirements to be overridden without the customer's knowledge, then places the responsibility for that failure back on the customer! So we are just left with an expensive worktop not configured how we asked. But then apparently we're not the decision makers...

Disappointed - didn't respond to e-mail inquiry (Wickes have already been out to see us & start the design work), and when I followed up, I was told on the phone (!) that unless I would commit to buy and install before the end of this month then I can't have an appointment until next month...pretty unfriendly/non-customer focused approach in my humble opinion...so I gave up, will give the business elsewhere even if it is more expensive...

Great service, even though my kitchen is very small. Phil was very patient and helpful in creating and designing a stylish, practical Kitchen. He matched my needs perfectly without trying to oversell.

Went in today for some help regarding a quote we'd had from a store near our home. They were so welcoming and helpful and really enhanced our already positive experience of Howdens.
