Choosing which restoration company to go with after suffering water damage is a big decision.
Going with Northeastern Restoration cost me thousands of dollars, botched work, lost time, and made it difficult for the actual restoration to be done after them. Choosing them was one of the biggest mistakes as a homeowner. I'm very upset, but I will write this review with only the facts so anyone else can make an informed decision.
The main points:
The workers that came to the house were very nice, 4.5/5.
They believed there was no mold. But they "did work anyway to make the customer happy", as the insurance adjustor told me they told them.
So they just used a fog machine and did some wiping, costing hundreds to thousands of dollars.
This is like a mechanic opening your trunk and saying "there is nothing wrong with your engine" but doing work and charging you anyway. The right thing to do would have been to say "we found nothing so we won't do more work. Get a second opinion." It was my mistake to not get a second opinion. I could tell they weren't really doing anything from the beginning.
The house still smells extremely of mold. The whole family still has the allergy symptoms from it. They did not fix it. What they do is get someone to come out and do a mold spore count, and if it comes at a certain level, they say "no mold, congratulations". But I got an independant Industrial Hygienist myself and they said that they can measure swabs and dust samples, just the spore count in the air does not prove there is no mold.
They were about to finish the work when there was SOAKING WET areas still. I opened up a section myself (not them, I had to do the work!) and water spilled out. If it wasn't for me, they would have just closed it up with the water still in there. As a response to this, they just ran some fans and dehumidifiers. It was $432 to run FANS and $850 to run a dehumidifier.
The job was around $2,500 dollars, and that included all the demolition and fake mold cleaning that did nothing. This is a very reasonable price. I was going to self pay. Once I involved the homeowners insurance, they charged another ~$2,500, making the entire bill +$5,000. This second round only included fans and dehumidifiers running.
Losing thousands of dollars to have no solution actually done hurts a lot, but that's not the worst part. The worst part is after all this time, the water dried out, so it made it much harder to find the actual water damage and actually fix the issue after they left.
I think there was two reasons this disaster happened and I lost thousands of dollars without the problem being fixed.
The first reason is, I think when they started they didn't want to do much because it was self pay. They didn't do extensive demo. One of the (very nice) workers told me this. My mistake was not involving homeowners insurance before calling any restoration company.
The second reason is, they couldn't find the water damage. This is fine, not everyone can get it right every time. I told the workers about other quotes and work proposals I got from other local restoration companies and they said they were really bad, and I believe them. So not every company agrees with each other's way of doing things. I think the workers at Northeastern did the best they could while trying to not demo too much.
When I saw they weren't really doing anything to fix the issue after the demo, I should have called it quits and just went with a second company, instead of praying that they actually manage to complete the job.
Should you go with Northeastern Restoration? I got estimates from other guys and these guys seemed the best. Maybe if you have a simpler job they can do the work perfectly. Maybe the entire industry is hit or miss and I got unlucky. I can just give you the facts of what happened.
I was left with a +$5,000 bill for a very tiny spot demo'd and absolutely zero of the mold exposed and remediated. Had to do it all over again a second time.
