Wasted over 5 hours today. Drove up to rent some equipment. Guy started it and it broke. No other available. Gave us something else to use. Drove back home to use and it wouldn’t stay running. Had to drive back with it to get refund. It was not a short trip. Now we have no equipment. Junk worn out equipment. Not to mention wasted a lot of gas and hauling a trailer around.

Sunbelt may be an excellent rental company but my experience was less than satisfactory due to 1. Misleading if not deceptive website info; 2. Hidden costs; and 3. Poor equipment. Let me begin by disclosing that I am a 76 year old DYIer trying to remove 35 year old linoleum from a townhouse at the lowest cost. I had removed about half of the vinyl but the remainder was stuck tight. When I found out that Sunbelt had a 100 lb. floor scraper machine for $74 a day I thought that this could solve my problem or so I believed. I found a video online that showed how easy it was to remove floor vinyl using the brand of machine that Sunbelt rented. Only later did I suspect that the vinyl used in the video had probably only been glued down for about a week. On to the details! 1. Sunbelt's website indicates that the 100 lb floor scraper comes with a blade to cut and scrap up the vinyl. What it doesn't tell you is that the blade you get on the machine is the one used by the previous customer not a new sharp blade. When I asked the Sunbelt employee who was loading the scraper into our truck why he was giving me a machine with a rusty blade that has chips on the edge he truthfully responded "so they can sell you a new blade" (@$28 each). 2. I thought $74 was a reasonable rental price but with the new blade, the environmental fee?, and the added '$11 for damage insurance (which they never disclosed until they had charged my credit card) things started to add up. 3. The scraper Sunbelt rented me must have been an older model as the online video I had seen showed a machine that had an adjustment ro change the angle of the blade. My scraper had a message between the handles that said " to adjust the angle of the blade lift up on the handles." This meant that in order to bring the blade into contact with the floor at an angle to allow it to scrap up the vinyl you had to hold up the rear of the 100 lb machine while you were pushing it across the floor. This would not be an issue for a 250 lb weightlifter but the rest of us find this difficult. Without lifting the machine to get a cutting angle for the blade the scraper just rolled over the vinyl without doing anything. By holding the rear wheels up about 4 to 6 inches I was able to remove the top layer of plastic on the linoleum but it would not touch the paper level glued to the floor. We repeatedly had to resharpen the blade with a grinder and metal file in order to get it to cut anything. I was able to get some of the paper and glue up by holding the rear of the machine up at a 45 to 60 degree angle. Had Sunbelt provided instructions or information on removing vinyl it would have been helpful. Needless to say, this floor scraper was more trouble than it was worth.
