We recently hired CT Chimney for a major repair after purchasing our home. The previous owners had neglected the chimney and there was an old liner remaining from a pellet stove, so significant work was needed before we could safely use our wood-burning fireplace.
We contacted Pat in early January, he was friendly, responsive, and easy to communicate with throughout the process. The crew that completed the work arrived on time each day and worked hard. They repointed the chimney, rebuilt the top portion with new ceramic inserts, and installed a chimney cap. The exterior of the chimney looks much better than it did before.
However, there were a few things that left us uncertain about the overall experience. The initial quote we received was $5,000, but when the crew arrived on the first day the scope of work was reassessed and the project became a $15,000+ job. While we understand that issues can sometimes be discovered once work begins, this was a significant change that may have been identified during the initial inspection.
The project was ultimately $15k, paid by check directly to Pat, but we never received a formal invoice, receipt or written documentation outlining the scope of work, materials used, or company details. For a project of this size, clearer paperwork would have been appreciated.
Another concern is that Pat was not present on site during the work, and we are not aware if he came to inspect the finished job personally. The crew appeared to be traveling workers (their truck had New Jersey license plates), and Pat handled communication remotely.
We agreed on the project if, at completion, we'd have a fully functional fireplace. Unfortunately, we are still unable to use our fireplace because the top chimney damper needs to be installed and that was not something they were able to do.
Additionally, the cleanup has been difficult. A large amount of masonry dust and debris was left in the yard. And because the ground was snowy and wet at the time, the powder has now hardened into the ground almost like concrete.
Overall, Pat and the crew were polite and punctual, and the chimney exterior looks good. However, the lack of documentation, the unfinished functionality of the fireplace, the change in price and the cleanup issues left us with mixed feelings about the overall experience.
