Total Comfort is awesome and great to work with. We had our old HVAC system stop working in the middle of a heat wave and Chris set us up with a date to have it replaced as quickly as they could. The techs were very polite, super friendly and extremely professional. They laid down a drop cloth and did their best to keep everything as clean as it was before they arrived. They had the job done with a complete replacement of our system in a day and a half and it works amazing. Also noticed a difference in our solar usage/UI bill. They were great and I will definitely recommend them to everyone!

How often do I need to change my air filters?
Your air filters should be replaced every one to three months depending on usage. This is vitally important to the performance of your HVAC systems and your indoor air quality. Check your filter frequently to determine if it’s dirty. If it is, change it.
Why does my HVAC unit have low airflow?
Reasons for low airflow in your HVAC system include lack of airflow, refrigerant, dirty air filter, and damaged ducts.
How often should I have my unit serviced?
Your HVAC systems should be serviced before the start of each heating and cooling season. So, your air conditioner should have regular maintenance performed at the end of winter or beginning of spring, while your heat pump or furnace should have its regular maintenance performed at the end of summer or beginning of fall.
Do you offer yearly maintenance contracts?
No. The cost of a routine maintenance call is determined by the number of systems in your home. Please use the “Contact Us” link to request the annual maintenance pricing.
After my air conditioner runs for a while, ice forms on the big pipe outside and it stops cooling. What could be the problem?
More than likely, it is either low on refrigerant or low on airflow. As a homeowner, replace your filter and allow the unit to thaw out. If the problem reoccurs, call to schedule service on your cooling system. We recommend having annual maintenance performed to keep your HVAC systems in peak operating conditions.
During the winter the fan occasionally shuts off on my heat pump outside unit, then restarts with a big puff of smoke. What is wrong with it?
Nothing is wrong with your heating unit. What appears to be smoke is steam from the outdoor coil after it completes a defrost cycle. After extended run times the outdoor unit will start to build frost or ice on the coil. The system is designed to go in a defrost mode when needed to clear the ice away and keep the efficiency level up.
If I replace my outdoor unit, do I need to also replace my indoor unit?
In most cases, the answer is yes. There are a variety of reasons why you should replace both the outdoor and indoor units simultaneously. For starters, air conditioner and heat pump outdoor units are manufactured to work with a matched indoor unit. When you mix and match units, it can result in reduced efficiency and performance. Also, if you bought your indoor and outdoor units at the same time, your indoor unit will probably be approaching the end of its useful life at about the same time as the outdoor unit. By not replacing the indoor unit too, all you’re doing is delaying the inevitable and likely paying higher energy bills at the same time.
By purchasing indoor and outdoor units simultaneously, you’ll get a warranty covering the whole system, meaning that you won’t have to cover the full cost of any needed repairs to your unit during the warranty period.
Do you offer financing on new HVAC installation?
Total Comfort participates with the CT Green Bank Smart-E Loan program and for customers who qualify, we offer a variety of plans that allow you to take care of home comfort today and pay for it later.
Do I qualify for energy efficiency tax credits?
Thanks to the IRA, if you made or are planning to make certain qualified energy-efficient improvements to your home after January 1, 2023, you may qualify for a tax credit from the IRS.
For heat pump and heat pump water heater projects, the tax credit amount is 30% of the total project cost (includes equipment and installation), up to a $2,000 maximum.
“So, if your project costs $1,000, you could claim 30% of that ($300),” says Richardson. “If your project is $10,000, you can claim a $2,000 tax credit.”
Tax credits are applied to the tax year you install the heat pump. For example, if your heat pump is deployed in 2023, you can redeem your credit when you submit your taxes in 2024 for the 2023 tax season.
This tax credit is a part of the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit. There is no lifetime dollar limit for this tax credit. You can claim the maximum annual credit each year that you make eligible improvements through the end of 2032. Other improvements that qualify include home energy audits and qualifying insulation projects.
