I want to start this off on a positive note, since we do love our home. We feel that the quality and design are perfect for us, and we have almost no complaints about the finished product. The floorplan is designed with Colorado in mind, and we feel there was a high level of detail associated with the architectural design. This is where the positivity ends...
We stumbled upon Wonderland while visiting a Toll Brothers community in Castle Rock. We spoke with the salesman, who was very friendly and eager to help. Almost instantly we decided we would build with Wonderland and thought the process would be great. We had just built another home two years prior, so we felt comfortable with the process and thought we knew what we were getting into.
The first major mistake the builder made was misinforming us on a key architectural detail in our master bedroom. The salesman made a material mistake in telling us the vertical dimensions of our bedroom, which caused us to choose a different elevation than we otherwise would have. There were several differences between the two elevation options, and the salesman did not know the differences, then told us incorrectly. My complaint with this is not that he was wrong, but that he didn't ensure he was correct (carelessness). We asked the question directly (in-person), and he gave us incorrect information. We didn't discover the mistake until they were framing the house, at which point it was too late to change the plan. We brought this issue up to the salesman and Wonderland management, who both told us "too bad". They admitted the mistake and then did nothing about it. The resolution on this issue was...nothing. They did give us the option to back out of our contract (several times, almost insistently), however; our home had already appreciated in value at this point. They knew if we backed out, they would be able to turn around and sell our house for $100k more than we paid, which shows me they are only concerned about the bottom line. Management was rude and unhelpful throughout this conflict and ultimately said "take it or leave it".
During our construction walkthroughs of the house, we noticed material mistakes in framing, which we brought to the builder's attention. Many, many other issues arose during construction due to lack of attention to detail and hiring subpar contractors. At one point, the building manager admitted they didn't have as much of a presence in Colorado as other builders, so they were getting put to the back of the line by contractors and material providers. This lead to things being done incorrectly, and subsequently being corrected, which delayed the build process. I suspect that these delays cost the company thousands of dollars and delayed the overall build by several weeks or months. I realize we were building in the midst of a global pandemic, but communication was poor, attention to detail was low, and Wonderland was unreceptive to any concerns (they just kept saying we could cancel our contract if we wanted). The approach taken by management on this issue (and every other issue) was appalling and made me not want to do business with these people.
We finally moved in several months late, and as I said, we love the home. Anyone who has built a new home knows that the warranty providers are not always the best, but Wonderland sets a new (low) bar for this service. We have had to submit several work orders since moving in (pretty routine stuff), and not one time were they here when they said they would be. A couple of appointments got cancelled the day of, which caused me to block off time in my very busy schedule, wait around for hours, then nothing happened. The person assigned to our community through 2-10 Warranty is unprofessional and horrible to work with.
Overall, we love our home, but are very disappointed in the process and the attitude from Wonderland Homes. I would not choose to build with them again, but would find a second-hand Wonderland Home if I could.
