- PWPatrick WattersJun 25, 20261.0Avoid Trane – 9 Years of Non-Stop Failures and Terrible Warranty Support We recently gave up and replaced our entire HVAC system after only 9 years of absolute misery. We had this system installed brand new when we bought our home, and it has been a complete lemon from day two. For reference, the units were a Trane XL16i Heat Pump (Thermopump) and a Hyperion TAM7 Air Handler/Heater. Here is the exact timeline of component failures we had to deal with on a system that should easily have lasted 15 to 20 years: Year 2: Low coolant due to a defective factory component. We had to fight Trane for 6 months just to get a cheque to cover the coolant refill under warranty. Year 5: Blown capacitor (paid out of pocket). Year 8: The motherboard fried and the flow valve failed. Our original installation company had closed, so we hired a new maintenance provider. Trane made the new technicians repeat the same diagnostic tests over and over again before they would finally release the warranty parts, stretching the process out for months. Year 9: Another massive coolant leak. We had to pay for a leak seal treatment and a full coolant recharge entirely out of pocket, only to be told immediately after that it now "proposedly" needed a sensor replacement. In total, we sunk approximately $4,000 out of pocket into maintaining this relatively new system. Trane’s equipment reliability is incredibly poor, but their customer service and warranty part distribution process is even worse. They make both the homeowner and the independent technicians jump through endless hoops just to get parts that failed due to factory defects. We have completely ripped the system out and replaced it with a different provider. Save yourself thousands of dollars and endless headaches: avoid Trane.
