  We recently rented a scissor lift from Sunbelt Rentals in Chilliwack for an exterior painting project on our home and shop. Unfortunately, the lift was leaking hydraulic fluid from the time it arrived.Because the leak wasn't immediately obvious, the equipment first burned sections of our lawn and then left permanent hydraulic stains across our concrete driveway before the problem was discovered. As soon as our painting contractor realized what was happening, work stopped immediately, and Sunbelt was contacted. We were told that sometimes an O-ring fails, which we understand can happen with mechanical equipment. The disappointment wasn't that the machine malfunctioned, it was the complete lack of customer service and accountability that followed.Despite renting equipment that arrived in a defective condition, we were ultimately told the damage was somehow our responsibility. We were unable to complete our painting project because continuing to use the lift would have caused additional damage to our property, yet we were still charged the full rental fee. What was equally frustrating was having to repeatedly follow up ourselves. Great customer service means proactively reaching out to customers when something goes wrong, taking ownership of the issue, and working toward a fair resolution. Instead, our concerns were dismissed, and responsibility was shifted back to us.As someone who has served as a Business Excellence Awards judge for more than 20 years, I appreciate that equipment failures happen. No company is perfect. However, exceptional companies distinguish themselves by how they respond when problems arise with accountability, empathy, and a genuine commitment to making things right. Unfortunately, that was not our experience with Sunbelt Rentals in Chilliwack. The damage to our property, the inability to complete our project, and the lack of meaningful follow-through left us extremely disappointed. I hope this feedback encourages improvements in both equipment maintenance and customer service, because customers deserve better when issues occur through no fault of their own. July 4th - After posting my original review, I also contacted the company directly by email in the hope of resolving this matter privately. Unfortunately, I have not received any response. To be clear, my concern has never been that the scissor lift developed a mechanical problem, equipment can fail. My disappointment is with how the situation was handled. Despite immediately reporting the hydraulic leak, no replacement machine was offered, we were charged the full rental fee of approximately $1,600 even though we couldn't complete our project as planned, and there has been no follow-up or acknowledgment from management. Good customer service isn't about never having problems, t's about how a company responds when they occur. Unfortunately, that accountability was missing in our experience.
